Background: Investigating predictive factors of reduced quality of life (QOL) of patients and their association with focal epilepsy can improve management and treatment strategies.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between affective temperaments, depression, anxiety, disease characteristics, and QOL and to explore the predictors of QOL in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and extratemporal lobe epilepsy (ETLE).

Methods: A total of 50 patients with TLE, 51 patients with ETLE, and 70 controls were enrolled. Affective temperaments were evaluated using the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego-Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A). QOL was assessed by the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory were used to explore depression and anxiety severity, respectively.

Results: Compared with the controls, patients with TLE and ETLE had significantly higher scores on all TEMPS-A scales, except on hyperthymic temperament. All the SF-36 subscale scores were lower in the TLE and ETLE groups. Linear regression analysis revealed that depressive symptoms, anxiety, depressive and irritable temperament, and seizure frequency were significant predictors of QOL in TLE. Patients with ETLE with temperamental disturbances, depressive symptoms, and polytherapy had a poorer QOL.

Conclusions: Affective temperaments, psychiatric disorders, and clinical factors may predict impaired QOL in patients with TLE and ETLE. Further studies are needed to identify predictors of QOL in various epilepsy subtypes.

Status epilepticus (SE) is a neurological emergency characterized by prolonged seizures, with significant risks of neuronal injury and mortality. This case presents a 60-year-old man with drug-resistant epilepsy and a history of recurrent prolonged seizures. His seizures began in early childhood and persisted despite multiple anti-seizure medications.

Background: Over the past decades, the analysis metabolic connectivity patterns has received significant attention in exploring the underlying mechanism of human behaviors, and the neural underpinnings of brain neurological disorders. Brain network can be considered a powerful tool and play an important role in the analysis and understanding of brain metabolic patterns. With the advantages and emergence of metabolic-based network analysis, this study aims to systematically review how brain properties, under various conditions, can be studied using Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography (FDG-PET) images and graph theory, as well as applications of this approach.

Background: Temporal lobe epilepsy is often accompanied by comorbid symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and cognitive dysfunction. Research indicates a close relationship between blood-brain barrier (BBB) impairment and these symptoms. DL-3n-butylphthalide (NBP) has been reported to protect the BBB, but the molecular mechanisms by which NBP protects the BBB in epilepsy models remain unclear.

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of adults with multifocal epilepsy.

Epilepsy Behav

January 2025

Epilepsy service, Department of Neurology, Cork University Hospital, Cork, Ireland; FutureNeuro Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dublin, Ireland.

Objective: Multifocal epilepsy is an important subtype of epilepsy, but it is sometimes difficult to recognise in general clinical practice. Distinguishing (uni)focal from multifocal drug resistant epilepsy is important when considering surgical resection. The presence of multiple discrete autonomous epileptogenic zones may limit surgical options to neuromodulation or palliative resection.
