Purpose: This study aimed to compare the tomographic features of the cornea on elevation maps between obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and keratoconus (KC) patients and to investigate the presence of susceptibility to ectatic corneal diseases in OSAS patients.

Design: This is a comparative cross-sectional case-control study.

Methods: This study included 84 eyes of 42 patients diagnosed with severe OSAS using polysomnography (apnea/hypopnea index > 30), 84 eyes of 56 patients diagnosed with keratoconus, and 84 eyes of 42 healthy subjects as control group and evaluated in three groups. Elevation maps of all the groups were performed using Pentacam, and topometric, pachymetric, and deviation indices were recorded.

Results: The study included 252 eyes of 130 participants divided in three groups. Comparing all the tomographic keratometric values, a significant difference was found among the three groups. All keratometric values were found to be higher in the OSAS patients group compared to those in the control group. Also topometric indices and Belin-Ambrosio enhanced ectasia display (BAD) were observed to be higher as in subclinical keratoconus and statistically significant when compared to those in the control group.

Conclusion: The study reveals the tomographic corneal characteristics and topometric and pachymetric indices of patients with severe OSAS at the time of diagnosis; these findings statistically significantly differ from the control group. In addition to the known association of floppy eyelid in OSAS patients, the suspicion of keratoconus should be kept in mind.

Background: Microglia undergo varying regional dependent functional changes, which can exacerbate cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease, but the full clinical relevance remains unclear. Ramified microglia survey the micro-environment and inert/amoeboid microglia engulf debris. A third morphological type; rod microglia, have been observed in a number of pathological conditions, but are relatively understudied.

Background: In-vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has recently shown that patients with clinically diagnosed Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) exhibit degeneration of the cholinergic nucleus basalis of Meynert and its white matter (WM) projections through the cingulum and external capsule pathways. Here, we propose an imaging-pathologic validation study aimed at investigating cholinergic WM pathways using post-mortem MRI of autopsy-confirmed AD, Lewy body dementia (LBD), and other neurodegenerative diseases (OTH).

Method: We included 53 brain donors (34 AD, 10 LBD, and 9 OTH, mainly including frontotemporal lobe degeneration and vascular disease, Table 1).

Background: Elevated iron in brain is a source of free radicals that causes oxidative stress which has been linked to neuropathologies and cognitive impairment among older adults. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of iron levels with transverse relaxation rate, R, and white matter hyperintensities (WMH), independent of the effects of other metals and age-related neuropathologies.

Method: Cerebral hemispheres from 437 older adults participating in the Rush Memory and Aging Project study (Table 1) were imaged ex-vivo using 3T MRI scanners.

Background: Anxiety is prevalent among cognitively unimpaired older adults and is associated with accelerated amyloid-β-related cognitive decline and incident cognitive impairment. Investigating these mechanisms is challenging due to low pathologic burden, high individual variability, and subsyndromal level of symptoms. Recently, brain networks involved in AD were successfully localized by mapping the brain connectivity of atrophy patterns associated with memory impairment and delusions.

Ferroptosis is linked to various pathological conditions; however, the specific targets and mechanisms through which traditional Chinese medicine influences ischemic stroke (IS)-induced ferroptosis remain poorly understood. In this study, data from the Gene Expression Omnibus and disease target databases (OMIM, GeneCards, DisGeNet, TTD, and DrugBank) were integrated with ferroptosis-related gene datasets. To identify key molecular targets of Chuanxiong Rhizoma (CX), drug ingredient databases, including PubChem and TCMBank, were employed to map CX-related targets (CX-DEGs-FRG and CX-IS-FRG).
