Although intranuclear coccidiosis was first identified in chelonians less than 30 years ago, it is now considered an important emerging disease. Symptoms include anorexia, weakness and weight loss, potentially leading to death of the infected animal. The use of molecular tools has led to improved diagnosis and has also led to an increase in known host species. Here we report a putative intranuclear coccidium in Mauremys leprosa (Schweigger), from Morocco, based on 18S rDNA sequence analysis. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first report of this parasite from a freshwater terrapin species.

We identified a novel herpesvirus in 2 deceased captive blue penguins (). Moderate-to-severe myocardiocyte atrophy and necrosis, and eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies (INIBs), were seen in myocardiocytes in one bird; reticuloendothelial (RE) cell INIBs and multifocal RE cell necrosis were seen in both birds. The histologic findings were suggestive of viral infection.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 (SCA7) is an autosomal dominant neurological disorder caused by deleterious CAG repeat expansion in the coding region of the ataxin 7 gene (polyQ-ataxin-7). Infantile-onset SCA7 leads to severe clinical manifestation of respiratory distress, but the exact cause of respiratory impairment remains unclear. Using the infantile-SCA7 mouse model, the SCA7266Q/5Q mouse, we examined the impact of pathological polyQ-ataxin-7 on hypoglossal (XII) and phrenic motor units.

TcsC, the corresponding kinase in was expected to be a cytosolic protein but is targeted to the nucleus. Activation of TcsC by the antifungal fludioxonil has lethal consequences for the fungus.

Background: Helicase for meiosis 1 (HFM1), a putative DNA helicase expressed in germ-line cells, has been reported to be closely associated with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI). However, the underlying molecular mechanism has not been clearly elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the function of HFM1 in the first meiotic prophase of mouse oocytes.
