The study reported the effect of granite sand on strength and microstructural developments in mortars prepare from OPC with a high coal fly ash (FA) content or from hybrid alkaline cements. The radiological behaviour of the resulting mortars was compared to materials prepared with siliceous sand (with particles sizes of <2 mm) and the relationship between such radiological findings and mortar microstructure and strength was explored. A new method for determining natural radionuclides and their activity concentration Index (ACI) on cement mortars (specifically to solid 5-cm cubic specimens) was applied and validated. The microstructural changes associated in mortars have no effect on mortar radiological content measurements. The mortars with granite sand exhibited very high ACI > 0.96, which would ultimately limit their use. A conclusion of interest is that where information is at hand on the starting materials (OPC, FA, sand, admixtures), their proportions in the mortar and the mixing liquid content (water or alkaline activators) their radiological content is accurately predicted. The inference is that a mortar's radiological content and ACI can be known prior to mixing, providing a criterion for determining its viability. That in turn lowers environmental risks and the health hazards for people in contact with such materials.

The interaction between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and ferrihydrite (Fh) is a crucial process to control the environmental behavior of heavy metals (HMs) in soil environments, with DOM playing a particularly strong role in HMs fate. Since chemical properties of DOM vary based on different soil parent materials, the underlying impact of DOM-Fh associations on HMs binding remains unclear. This study systematically investigated the interactions between DOM from three soil parent materials (fluvial alluvium: FDOM, sand-shale: SDOM and granite: GDOM) and Fh, and meanwhile understand their effects on the environmental behavior of Cd and Pb under various environmental conditions.

Study on the Ratio and Model Test of Similar Materials of Heavily Weathered Granite.

Materials (Basel)

October 2024

Key Laboratory of Far-Shore Wind Power Technology, Power China Huadong Engineering Corporation Limited-HDEC, Hangzhou 311122, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the bearing characteristics of rock-socketed single piles in Fujian Province using material tests and model tests that simulate weathered granite properties.
  • Ten groups of sample materials were created, and Specimen 1 was found to best represent the desired mechanical properties after thorough testing, including triaxial testing.
  • Results from applying horizontal and vertical loads showed that the pile behaves as a flexible structure, providing crucial insights for designing single pile foundations in weathered granite areas, particularly for offshore wind energy projects.

It is very important to clarify the optimization method of the rock-like material ratio for accurately characterizing mechanical properties similar to the original rock. In order to explore the optimal ratio of rock-like materials in gneissic granite, the water-paste ratio, iron powder content and coarse sand content were selected as the influencing factors of the ratio. An orthogonal test design and sensitivity analysis of variance were used to obtain the significant influencing factors of the ratio factors on seven macroscopic mechanical parameters, including compressive strength , tensile strength , shear strength , elastic modulus , Poisson's ratio , internal friction angle and cohesion A multivariate linear regression equation was constructed to obtain the quantitative relationship between the significant ratio factors and the macroscopic mechanical parameters.

Patterns distribution, concentrations and sources of radioactive elements from black sand in the Red Sea coast, Egypt.

J Hazard Mater

December 2024

Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, Assiut University, 71516 Assiut, Egypt; Molecular Biology Research & Studies Institute, Assiut University, 71516 Assiut, Egypt. Electronic address:

In Egypt, the distribution of black sand in various coastal regions has been readily apparent by thorough research. Unfortunately, these investigations did not measure radioactivity in black sand, particularly in the vicinity of the Red Sea. Gamma-ray spectroscopy was used to detect the naturally occurring radioactivity from U, Th, K, and Ra in black sand samples from eight locations along the Red Sea coast: Ras Elbehar, Gemsa, Hurghada Elahiaa, Hurghada Titanic, Safaga, Qusier Elsharm Alqbly, Gabal Alrosass, and Marsa Alam.
