We studied the phase behavior of two-dimensional systems of Janus-like particles on a triangular lattice using Monte Carlo methods. The model assumes that each particle can take on one of the six orientations with respect to the lattice, and the interactions between neighboring particles were weighted depending on the degree to which their A and B halves overlap. In this work, we assumed that the AA interaction was fixed and attractive, while the AB and BB interactions varied. We demonstrated that the phase behavior of the systems considered strongly depended on the magnitude of the interaction energies between the AB and BB halves. Here, we considered systems with non-repulsive interactions only and determined phase diagrams for several systems. We demonstrated that the phase diagram topology depends on the temperature at which the close-packed systems undergo the orientational order-disorder transition.

The concept of non-Hermiticity has expanded the understanding of band topology, leading to the emergence of counter-intuitive phenomena. An example is the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE), which involves the concentration of eigenstates at the boundary. However, despite the potential insights that can be gained from high-dimensional non-Hermitian quantum systems in areas such as curved space, high-order topological phases and black holes, the realization of this effect in high dimensions remains unexplored.

ConspectusThe emergence of two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as graphene, transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), has sparked significant interest due to their unique physicochemical, optical, electrical, and mechanical properties. Furthermore, their atomically thin nature enables mechanical flexibility, high sensitivity, and simple integration onto flexible substrates, such as paper and plastic. The surface chemistry of a nanomaterial determines many of its properties, such as its chemical and catalytic activity.

Electronic address:

Chitosan (CS) is a versatile polysaccharide with numerous inherent biological activity, while the lack of amphiphilicity limits its application in emulsion-based systems. In this study, erythorbyl myristate (EM) with interfacial activity was chemically modified to 5-O-succinyl EM (EMS) and grafted onto CS to improve the emulsifying properties. The grafting reaction was conducted by the catalysis of protease, with the progress of the reaction monitored by HPLC analysis and UV absorbance measurement.

Transition metal nitrides are well-known 3D superconductor materials. However, there is a lack of knowledge related to their two-dimensional (2D) counterparts, which have several potential technological applications. In this work, we predict, using an evolutionary algorithm coupled with a first-principles approach, a set of novel 2D superconductive structures based on tungsten nitride.

Anion-Responsive π-Conjugated Macrocycles That Form Ordered Structures.

Ritsumeikan University, Department of Applied Chemistry, College of Life Sciences, 1-1-1 Nojihigashi, 525-8577, Kusatsu, JAPAN.

In this study, anion-responsive π-conjugated macrocycles were synthesized to demonstrate anion-binding and ion-pairing properties along with the ordered structures.  Ion-pairing charge-by-charge assembly of a [1+2]-type complex of a macrocycle as a pseudo π-electronic anion and a countercation was revealed by single-crystal X-ray analysis.  Further, two-dimensional (2D) arrays of the macrocycles bearing alkoxy chains, exhibiting anion-driven disordered structures, were constructed on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrate as observed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).
