NSO compounds mainly exist in geological bodies in the form of nonhydrocarbons and asphaltenes with abundant geological and geochemical information. Combined with the gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technology, positive-ion electrospray ionization Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance MS (FT-ICR MS) was used to understand the composition and distribution characteristics of NSO compounds in the oil sands of the Dongpu Depression and to explore their paleoenvironmental significance. The results show that -alkanes are characterized by an even carbon number and phytane dominance, suggesting a saline lacustrine environment. Certain abundance of C and β-carotane, high gammacerane content, and low diasterane content are detected in the analyzed samples, reflecting the saline-reducing paleoenvironment for the organic matter. Nine types of heteroatom compounds are detected: N, NO, NS, O, OS, O, OS, S, and S. The main compounds are S and N compounds, followed by OS compounds. The double-bond equivalent (DBE) value of S compounds is mainly distributed between 3 and 12, and the carbon number is mainly distributed between 18 and 35. The DBE value of N compounds is mainly distributed between 4 and 14, and the carbon number is mainly distributed in the range 15-35. Among the S compounds, DBE compounds (thiophenes) have relatively more sulfur-containing carotenoids (C). The abundance of C S and the ratio of pyridine and its homologue DBE/DBE N compounds show a good contrast with the paleoenvironment indicators of gammacerane/C hopane and diasterane/regular sterane. They can be used as a reference for the paleoenvironment index. Maturity is another factor affecting the distribution of NSO heteroatoms in the oil sands. NSO compounds are enriched in the DBE area with higher condensation, and the main peak carbon shifts forward. As the maturity increases, the relative abundance of N compounds increases, the aromatization intensifies, and carbon is broken into short chains. The research results shed light on the potential application of NSO compounds in petroleum exploration based on FT-ICR MS.

Hydrothermal fluid plays a crucial role in the generation and migration of hydrocarbons within sedimentary basins. Herein, we employed bulk analysis and high-resolution mass spectrometry techniques to investigate the transformation dynamics from source rock to hydrocarbons under conditions influenced by magmatic activities in the Kongdian Formation, Huanghua Depression, China. The results revealed that hydrocarbon generation in the Ek shale of the study area was significantly influenced by abnormal heating from hydrothermal fluids.

Increasing use of scrubbers on vessels for reduction of SOx emissions has led to environmental concerns due to discharge of partly persistent and toxic substances such as polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC) into the sea. A comprehensive analysis of the dissolved and particulate phases of the discharge water from open and closed loop operations on four ships was performed. 71 PAC in the discharge waters varied in concentration and were associated with those of the fuels used, as they mainly originate in unburnt fuel.

Among the emerging investigative fields, forensic medicine and toxicology lead to analyzing fatalities in medico-legal expert opinion formulating. While discussing the problem, the authors have selected 96 fatal cases from their expert practice including the period from 2010 to 2023, in which deaths were connected with taking new psychoactive substances (NPS's) belonging to various chemical categories, mainly synthetic cathinones (SC), synthetic cannabinoids (SCan) and non-medical synthetic opioids (NSO). In the investigated cases, toxicological analysis revealed 37 NPS's and their 9 metabolites.
