Glycerol is the most widely used plasticizer for the biopolymer chitosan. However, there remains a lack of understanding of the molecular-level interactions between chitosan and glycerol. Here, we describe an in-depth spectroscopic study of the intermolecular interactions between the monomeric repeating unit of chitosan, glucosamine, and the plasticizer glycerol. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy were used to probe glucosamine assembly at high and low concentrations to establish diagnostic signals for intra- and intermolecular glucosamine interactions. Systematic addition of glycerol was found to disrupt intramolecular glucosamine hydrogen bonds and promote glucosamine self-assembly. Furthermore, we observed a significant preference for glycerol binding to the amine functionality of glucosamine. These findings indicate that the plasticization of chitosan with glycerol requires a specific binding motif and likely occurs via the gel theory mechanism.

The adenosine A receptor (AR), a class A GPCR, is a known player in neurological diseases, including Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, and is also implicated in SARS-CoV-2 infection. Recent studies have revealed its oligomerization with metabotropic glutamate receptor type 5 (mGluR), a class C G protein coupled receptor (GPCR) that exists in the homodimeric form. Simultaneous activation of both receptors synergistically enhances mGluR-mediated effects in the hippocampus.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is a persistent organic pollutant of global concern due to its environmental presence,bioaccumulative potential and toxicological impacts. This review synthesizes current knowledge regarding PFOS exposure, bioaccumulation patterns and adverse health outcomes in human population. Analysis of worldwide biomonitoring data, and epidemiological studies reveals PFOS systemic effects, including immunological dysfunction (decreased vaccine response), developmental toxicity (reduced birth weight), hepatic metabolic disruption, potential carcinogenogenicity, and reproductive abnormalities.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis is one of the most challenging conditions in hepatology, and due to our limited understanding of its pathogenesis, no causal therapies are currently available. While it was long assumed that a minority of people with IBD also develop PSC, which is sometimes labeled an extraintestinal manifestation of IBD, the clinical phenotype, genetic and intestinal microbiota associations strongly argue for PSC-IBD being a distinct form of IBD, existing alongside ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. In fact, the liver itself could contribute to intestinal pathology, clinically overt in 60 - 80 % of patients.

Objectives: GCA is a granulomatous vasculitis affecting large vessels, leading to intimal occlusion accompanied by the accumulation of myofibroblasts. Histopathologically, GCA is characterized by destruction of the tunica media and hypertrophy of the intima with invasion of activated CD4+ T cells, macrophages and multinucleated giant cells (MNGCs). Despite these well-defined histopathological features, the molecular pathology of GCA has largely remained elusive.
