Introduction: Women with early bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO) have greater Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk than women with spontaneous menopause (SM), but the pathway toward this risk is understudied. Considering associative memory deficits may reflect early signs of AD, we studied how BSO affected brain activity underlying associative memory.

Methods: Early midlife women with BSO (with and without 17β-estradiol therapy [ET]) and age-matched controls (AMCs) with intact ovaries completed a face-name associative memory task during functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Background: The effectiveness of implementing fall prevention interventions (FPI) among hospitalised adults exhibits variability. Our review explored implementation strategies for FPIs, how these strategies are operationalised and their impact on fall rates and adherence.

Methods: Databases were searched up to October 2024 for studies reporting the implementation of FPIs in hospitalised adults.

High-sensitivity cardiac troponin T and N-terminal b-type natriuretic propeptide are associated with cardiac and all-cause mortality in older adults - A population-based ten-year follow-up study.

Clin Chim Acta

December 2024

Southwest Finland Wellbeing Services County, Turku University Hospital Services, Geriatric Medicine, 20521 Turku, Finland; Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Medicine, Unit of Geriatric Medicine, University of Turku and Turku University Hospital, 20700 Turku, Finland.

Background: Cardiac troponin T (cTnT) and N-terminal B-type natriuretic propeptide (proBNP) are mainly used as biomarkers to diagnose specific conditions of the heart, but they also have predictive ability. Our aim was to study their associations with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in an older population in non-acute conditions.

Methods: A population-based study with a ten-year follow-up.

Electronic address:

Bacteriocin can effectively improve the gut inflammation for their superior antibacterial activity. However, its inherent attributes, such as easily degraded and off-target effect in the gastrointestinal environment, make bacteriocins' efficient oral delivery a great challenge. Herein, a pectin/4-carboxyphenylboric acid/carboxymethyl chitosan (PEC/CPBA/CMCS) hydrogel microbead targeted oral delivery system was innovatively developed for the plantaricin RX-8 protective delivery, precisely targeted inflammatory microenvironment (IME) and sustained released plantaricin RX-8 by pH/ROS dual stimulation response.

A Remote Management-Centric Post-Discharge Pathway for Patients Admitted to GIM with Heart Failure.

Am J Med

December 2024

Department of Medicine, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada; HoPingKong Centre for Excellence in Education and Practice, University Health Network, Toronto, ON, Canada; Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, University Health Network, Toronto, ON, Canada.

Background: Few GIM-specific heart failure transition of care (TOC) programs exist. We thus piloted a TOC program for heart failure patients discharged from GIM that incorporates a remote patient management program, Medly.

Methods: This single-centre, prospective proof-of-concept study described sociodemographic and medical characteristics of included patients, and computed summary statistics to describe clinical and workload outcomes.
