is a Gram-negative bacillus and marine pathogen that rarely causes disease in humans. We report the first Moroccan case of multidrug-resistant bacteremia and describe the bacteriological, clinical, and antibiogram characteristics of this isolate, which was repeatedly isolated from the blood of a 66-year-old hypertensive man who underwent femoral coronary angiography after a myocardial infarction.

Neglected class A carbapenemases: Systematic review of IMI/NmcA and FRI from a One Health perspective.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Laboratoire de Bactériologie, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Montpellier, Montpellier, France; UMR MIVEGEC, Université de Montpellier, IRD, CNRS, Montpellier, France.

Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales are pathogens classified as a critical priority by the World Health Organization and a burden on human health worldwide. IMI, NmcA, and FRI are under-detected class A carbapenemases that have been reported in the human, animal and environmental compartments, particularly these last 5 years. Bacteria producing these carbapenemases have been mostly identified in digestive carriage screenings, but they are also involved in severe infections, such as bacteremia.

Article Synopsis
  • Infective endocarditis (IE) can occur in adults with ventricular septal defects (VSD), and this case reports a rare instance involving systemic embolisms and aortic pseudoaneurysms.
  • A 27-year-old woman with a previously asymptomatic VSD presented with prolonged fever and was found to have staphylococcus infection, heart murmurs, and serious complications like mycotic aneurysms and embolisms.
  • The patient received targeted antibiotics and underwent urgent heart surgery, emphasizing the importance of checking for systemic embolism in right ventricle IE and noting that congenital VSD can lead to serious complications from bacteremia.

A case report of fatal bloodstream infection in Zhejiang, China.

Future Microbiol

November 2024

Department of Clinical Laboratory, Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital (Affiliated People's Hospital, Hangzhou Medical College), Hangzhou, Zhejiang, 310014, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Japanese spotted fever (JSF) is a serious infection caused by a zoonotic pathogen, which was diagnosed in a 64-year-old woman who had an unknown fever and noticeable skin swelling.
  • The patient developed a severe bloodstream infection and was treated with doxycycline, but sadly died due to complications including septic shock and organ failure.
  • Early treatment is crucial since vague symptoms can lead to severe outcomes, and Q-mNGS (a pathogen detection method) should be more widely used by doctors for its accuracy and comprehensive detection capabilities.

Article Synopsis
  • A louse-borne bacterium is highlighted as a neglected cause of serious infections, particularly affecting impoverished individuals and can lead to conditions like bacteremia and infective endocarditis.
  • In October 2023, Health Canada reported an outbreak of donor-derived infections linked to three deceased homeless donors in Alberta, Canada, adding to similar cases in the U.S.
  • The article emphasizes the need for better screening of organ donors and monitoring of transplant recipients, discussing both epidemiological strategies and the limitations of current diagnostic tests in the transplant setting.
