Dysbiosis of the gastric microbiome is involved in the development of gastric cancer (GC). A number of studies have demonstrated an increase in the relative abundance of in GC. In this review, we present data that support the overgrowth of in GC from studies on molecular and bacterial culture of the gastric microbiome, discuss the heterogenic effects of on the health of human stomach, and explore the potential roles of the overgrowth of in gastric carcinogenesis. Further studies are required to examine the association between and GC at strain and species levels, which would facilitate to elucidate its role in the carcinogenic process.

Background: Patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension may have alterations in intestinal barrier resulting in increased susceptibility for infections. We investigated the effect of propranolol in gastrointestinal motility, permeability and bacterial overgrowth in cirrhosis.
Methods: Patients with cirrhosis and esophageal varices were studied before and after a build-up dose of propranolol according to standard guidelines.

Communication between the foregut and the hindgut is amply illustrated by the gastro-colonic reflex and the impact of constipation on gastric function. Less well studied are the effects of the small intestinal or colonic microbiome and its metabolites on motor and secretory activities in the esophagus and stomach. In the study, the authors posit that small intestinal bacterial overgrowth promotes gastroesophageal and laryngo-pharyngeal reflux and in support of this hypothesis report an amelioration of related symptoms with antibiotic and dietary therapies.

Long-term acid suppression with proton pump inhibitors (PPI) leads to hypochlorhydria and facilitates the growth of bacterial flora in the small intestine. Novel acid-suppressants called potassium-competitive acid blockers (P-CABs) seem to be superior to PPIs.
