Classic imaging systems may experience deleterious effects of optical turbulence, leading to their quality degradation induced by image jitter and blur. Using a recently introduced model for the refractive index power spectrum of natural water turbulence accounting for average temperature in the range of 0°-30°C and average salinity concentration in NaCl in the range of 0-40 ppt, we derive expressions for turbulence-induced modulation transfer functions. Our analysis indicates that the imaging systems are very sensitive not only to the variance of fluctuations in these parameters but also to their average values. Our results are essential for underwater optical engineering, providing regional and seasonal variations in optical turbulence.

To achieve real-time deep learning wavefront sensing (DLWFS) of dynamic random wavefront distortions induced by atmospheric turbulence, this study proposes an enhanced wavefront sensing neural network (WFSNet) based on convolutional neural networks (CNN). We introduce a novel multi-objective neural architecture search (MNAS) method designed to attain Pareto optimality in terms of error and floating-point operations (FLOPs) for the WFSNet. Utilizing EfficientNet-B0 prototypes, we propose a WFSNet with enhanced neural architecture which significantly reduces computational costs by 80% while improving wavefront sensing accuracy by 22%.

In this study, we present a dual-hop decode-and-forward relaying-based free-space optical (FSO) communication system. We consider utilizing simultaneous lightwave information and power transfer (SLIPT) with a time-splitting technique at the relay, where the direct current component of the received optical signal is harvested as a transmit power for the relay. It is assumed that the FSO links experience a Malaga turbulence channel with pointing errors.

Adaptive optics (AO) systems are capable of correcting wavefront aberrations caused by transmission media or defects in optical systems. The deformable mirror (DM) plays a crucial role as a component of the adaptive optics system. In this study, our focus is on analyzing the ability of a 97-element MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) DM to correct blurred images of extended sources affected by atmospheric turbulence.

Brown carbon (BrC) has been recognized as an important light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosol, yet understanding of its influence on regional climate and air quality has been lacking, mainly due to the ignorance of regional coupled meteorology-chemistry models. Besides, assumptions about its emissions in previous explorations might cause large uncertainties in estimates. Here, we implemented a BrC module into the WRF-Chem model that considers source-dependent absorption and avoids uncertainties caused by assumptions about emission intensities.

Background: The development of heat transfer devices used for heat conversion and recovery in several industrial and residential applications has long focused on improving heat transfer between two parallel plates. Numerous articles have examined the relevance of enhancing thermal performance for the system's performance and economics. Heat transport is improved by increasing the Reynolds number as the turbulent effects grow.
