We propose a rectangular column two-dimensional square lattice photonic crystal to realize zero refractive index. Through analysis of the energy band structure of the photonic crystal structure, the lattice constant and side length of the rectangular columns can be optimized, and the Dirac cone dispersion appears at the center of the Brillouin zone. The Dirac cone is formed by the interaction of a monopolar eigenstate and a dipolar eigenstate to form a triple accidental degenerate state. The effective medium theory is used to invert the effective electromagnetic parameters of the photonic crystal with a double zero refractive index. The zero-phase change and the focusing characteristic of the concave lens of this kind of zero-refractive-index material are verified. Importantly, we have achieved transmission and reflection cloaking with this zero-index medium. Through the analysis of the amplitude and phase distribution characteristics of the electromagnetic field, it is proved that the designed cloaking devices have obvious cloaking effect.

Femtosecond laser-ablative aqueous synthesis of multi-drug antiviral nanoparticles.

Nanomedicine (Lond)

March 2025

Department of Chemistry and The Institute for Laser, Photonics, and Biophotonics, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, Buffalo, NY, USA.

Background: Nanomedicine offers a number of innovative strategies to address major public health burdens, including complex respiratory illnesses. In this work, we introduce a multi-drug nanoparticle fabricated using femtosecond laser ablation for the treatment of influenza, SARS-CoV-2, and their co-infections.

Methods: The SARS-CoV-2 antiviral, remdesivir; the influenza antiviral, baloxavir marboxil; and the anti-inflammatory, dexamethasone, were co-crystalized and then ablated in aqueous media using a femtosecond pulsed laser and subsequently surface modified with the cationic polymer, chitosan, or poly-d-lysine.

A new deep-blue emitting and highly fluorescent anthracene (ANTH) derivative containing perfluorobenzyl (Bn) groups, 9,10-ANTH(Bn), was synthesized in a single step reaction of ANTH or ANTH(Br) with BnI, using either a high-temperature Cu-/NaSO-promoted reaction or via a room-temperature photochemical reaction. Its structure was elucidated by NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffractometry. The latter revealed no π-π interaction between neighboring ANTH cores.

This study aimed to synthesize cetuximab (CTX) conjugated hydroxyapatite zirconium (HApZr-CTX) as a nanocarrier for active delivery of photosensitizer and therapeutic radionuclide. The system enabled targeted radioenhancer in X-ray dynamic therapy and radioimmunotherapy for lung cancer. The results showed that HApZr-CTX had the main characteristics of hydroxyapatite crystal in X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), with particle size twice bigger, according to DLS-PSA and TEM measurements.

Advanced Crystallization Methods for Thin-Film Lithium Niobate and Its Device Applications.

Materials (Basel)

February 2025

Institute of Novel Semiconductors, State Key Laboratory of Crystal Materials, Shandong University, Jinan 250100, China.

Lithium niobate (LiNbO) has remarkable ferroelectric properties, and its unique crystal structure allows it to undergo significant spontaneous polarization. Lithium niobate plays an important role in the fields of electro-optic modulation, sensing and acoustics due to its excellent electro-optic and piezoelectric properties. Thin-film LiNbO (TFLN) has attracted much attention due to its unique physical properties, stable properties and easy processing.

Hexagonal (β-) NaYF and LiYF doped with trivalent lanthanide ions (Ln, , Er, Tm, and Yb) are well-known photon upconverting materials. This property is crucially determined by the precise location of the Ln dopant ions and their closest neighbouring ions in the host material. However, due to the inherent disorder of the crystal structures the atomistic structure of a disordered crystal such as β-NaYF is not unambiguously provided by X-ray diffraction techniques.
