Objective: This study was intended to evaluate the predictive values of serum procalcitonin (PCT), lactate, creatine kinase (CK-MB), and troponin I on the diagnosis and staging of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively retrieved data from electronic medical records at our children's hospital, and we included all term newborns admitted between December 2018 and June 2020 with features of perinatal asphyxia. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under the curve (AUC) were used to measure and evaluate the predictive values of biomarkers. p values < 0.05 were set as statistical significance.

Results: A total of 201 neonates were included. They were grouped as control (n = 40), mild HIE (n = 105), moderate HIE (n = 36), and severe HIE (n = 20). Serum lactate, PCT, CK-MB, and troponin I levels in severe hypoxic-ischemic brain injury group were significantly higher than those in mild to moderate hypoxic-ischemic brain injury group and control group (p < 0.05). Based on ROC and AUC analysis, troponin I showed highest predictive ability with AUC of 0.904, and sensitivity and specificity of 95.00% and 87.50% respectively.

Conclusion: Serum troponin I has a good predictive value for neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy after perinatal asphyxia.

Ischemic stroke can cause damage to neurons, resulting in neurological dysfunction. The main treatments in the acute phase include intravenous thrombolysis, endovascular stent-assisted vascular thrombectomy and antiplatelet therapy. Due to the limitations of the time window and the risk of early intracranial hemorrhage, finding active treatment plans is crucial for improving therapy.

Objective: To assess variability among data elements collected among existing neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) data registries worldwide and to determine the need for future harmonization of standard common data elements.

Study Design: This was a cross-sectional study of data elements collected from current or recently employed HIE registry data forms. Registries were identified by literature search and email inquiries to investigators worldwide.

Background: To explore the utility of general movements assessment as a predictive tool of the neurological outcome in term-born infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) at ages six and 12 months.

Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted for 18 months (August 2018 to December 2019). Term-born newborns with HIE were included.

The Potential of Neonatal Organ Donation in Central Sweden.

Cell Transplant

January 2025

Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.

Pediatric organ transplant recipients have a higher risk for wait list mortality due to the scarcity of size matched organs. Neonatal organ donation could potentially ameliorate the discrepancy but is currently not implemented in Sweden. This study aims to evaluate the potential of neonatal organ donation in central Sweden using a standardized protocol with organ specific criteria.

: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in late preterm and term neonates accounts for neonatal mortality and unfavorable neurodevelopmental outcomes in survivors despite therapeutic hypothermia (TH) for neuroprotection. The circumstances of death in neonates with HIE, including involvement of neonatal palliative care (NPC) specialists and neurodevelopmental follow-up at 18-24 months in survivors, warrant further evaluation. : A retrospective multicenter cohort study including neonates ≥ 35 weeks gestational age with moderate to severe HIE receiving TH, registered in the Swiss National Asphyxia and Cooling Register between 2011 and 2021.
