Notch signalling is a well-conserved signalling pathway that regulates cell fate through cell-cell communication. A typical feature of Notch signalling is 'lateral inhibition', whereby two neighbouring cells of equivalent state of differentiation acquire different cell fates. Recently, mathematical and computational approaches have addressed the Notch dynamics in neural development. Typical examples of lateral inhibition are observed in the specification of neural stem cells in the embryo and sensory organ precursors in the thorax. In eye disc development, Notch signalling cooperates with other signalling pathways to define the evenly spaced positioning of the photoreceptor cells. The interplay between Notch and epidermal growth factor receptor signalling regulates the timing of neural stem cell differentiation in the optic lobe. In this review, we summarize the theoretical studies that have been conducted to elucidate the Notch dynamics in these systems and discuss the advantages of combining mathematical models with biological experiments.

Determination of Constraint-Independent Crack Tip Opening Angle for Stable Crack Growth in High-Strength Ductile Steels.

The crack tip opening angle (CTOA) is one of fracture toughness parameters that has been used for decades in describing large stable crack growth in thin-walled aerospace structures under the low-constraint conditions. Recently, the pipeline industry has developed a growing interest in using the CTOA parameter to serve as the minimum required fracture toughness to arrest dynamic crack propagation in modern gas transmission pipelines made of high-strength ductile steel. To meet this industrial need, the CTOA test standard ASTM E3039 was therefore developed for measuring the constant critical CTOA.

The synthesis of monomers with two epoxy structures (EIA) was successfully achieved by adopting holo-biobased feedstocks and in situ solvolysis reaction. The molecular structure of EIA was subjected to characterization through the use of infrared spectroscopy (IR), mass spectrometry (MS), and nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectroscopy (H NMR). The EIA was employed as the epoxy monomers for the synthesis of the grafted compatibilizer, resulting in the successful preparation of a fully bio-based and high epoxy value grafted compatibilizer (PLA-g-EIA (PLE)).

The vertebrate segmentation clock drives periodic somite segmentation during embryonic development. Her1 and Her7 clock proteins generate oscillatory expression of their own genes as well as that of deltaC in zebrafish. In turn, DeltaC and DeltaD ligands activate Notch signaling, which then activates transcription of clock genes in neighboring cells.

Many different animal developmental and homeostatic processes rely on signalling via the highly conserved Notch pathway. Often Notch signalling has iterative roles during cell specification and differentiation, controlling not only the state of progenitor cells but also the fate and function of their progeny. Its roles continue throughout the lifespan of the organism, regulating normal tissue maintenance, as well as operating in response to damage.

Microwave photonics, with its advanced high-frequency signal processing capabilities, is expected to play a crucial role in next-generation wireless communications and radar systems. The realization of highly integrated, high-performance, and multifunctional microwave photonic links will pave the way for its widespread deployment in practical applications, which is a significant challenge. Here, leveraging thin-film lithium niobate intensity modulator and programmable cascaded microring resonators, we demonstrate a tunable microwave photonic notch filter that simultaneously achieves high level of integration along with high dynamic range, high link gain, low noise figure, and ultra-high rejection ratio.
