Intrauterine exposure to particulate matter (PM) has been associated with an increased risk of asthma development, which may differ by the age of asthma onset, sex, and pollutant concentration. To investigate the pulmonary effects of in utero exposure to concentrated urban ambient particles (CAPs) in response to house dust mite (HDM) sensitization in juvenile mice. Mice were exposed to CAPs (600 μg/m PM) during the gestational period. Twenty-two-day postnatal mice were sensitized with HDM (100 μg, intranasally, 3 times per week). Airway responsiveness (AHR), serum immunoglobulin, and lung inflammation were assessed after 43 days of the postnatal period. Female (n = 47) and male (n = 43) mice were divided into four groups as follows: (1) FA: not exposed to CAPs; (2) CAPs: exposed to CAPs; (3) HDM: sensitized to HDM; and (4) CAPs+HDM: exposed to CAPs and HDM-sensitized. PM exposure did not worsen lung hyperresponsiveness or allergic inflammation in sensitized animals. The levels of the lung cytokines IL-4, TNF-α, and IL-2 were differentially altered in male and female animals. Males presented hyporesponsiveness and increased lung macrophagic inflammation. There were no epigenetic changes in the IL-4 gene. In conclusion, intrauterine exposure ambient PM did not worsened allergic pulmonary susceptibility but affected the pulmonary immune profile and lung function, which differed by sex.

Swimming produces many psychophysiological effects, including blood, hormonal, enzymatic, pulmonary, cardiovascular and energetic adaptations. However, asthma and allergies are becoming increasingly prevalent medical issues among elite endurance-trained swimmers, where exercise-induced asthma or bronchospasm is frequently reported. Heavy endurance swimming training, especially under adverse conditions, stresses the airway mucosa, leading to inflammatory changes, as observed in induced sputum in competitive swimmers.

An increasing number of studies have been investigating the co-occurrence of posttraumatic symptoms and dissociation in trauma-exposed samples. As traumatized refugees are particularly susceptible to developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between PTSD and dissociation in a traumatized refugee sample. Cross-sectional data from a clinical refugee sample ( = 526) were collected.

Poly-N-acetyllactosamine (poly-LacNAc) is ubiquitously expressed on cell surface glycoconjugates, serving as the backbone of complex glycans and an extended scaffold that presents diverse glycan epitopes. The branching of poly-LacNAc, where internal galactose (Gal) residues have β1-6 linked N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) attached, forms the blood group I-antigen, which is closely associated with various physiological and pathological processes including cancer progression. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear as many of the I-antigen sequences are undefined and inaccessible.

A variety of autoimmune disorders are associated with an increased risk of thrombosis. Previous studies have suggested combined therapy of heparin and therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) with fresh frozen plasma (FFP) as the replacement fluid is beneficial in some cases of acute flare-up of autoimmune diseases complicated by thrombotic events. Nevertheless, it remains unknown whether clinicians do more harm than good by exposing patients to a "thrombotic storm" through simultaneous administration of heparin and the clotting factors in the FFP during TPE.

Low-income, urban-dwelling Black adults are disproportionately affected by traumatic experiences, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression and encounter inequities in treatment access. In addition to the benefits Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for depression, there is preliminary evidence of successful symptom reduction in PTSD via MBCT across two prior pilot studies in veterans. Studies examining the effects of MBCT among trauma-exposed Black adults remains limited, and examination of effects across specific PTSD clusters is almost nonexistent.
