Phenolic bisabolane-type sesquiterpenoids (PBS) represent a rare class of natural products with diverse biological activities. In this study, chemical investigations of the fungus Aspergillus flavipes 297 resulted in the isolation and identification of seven PBS, including a pair of new enantiomers (+)-1a and (-)-1b, a new derivative 2, and five previously reported ones 3-7. The chemical structures of the isolated PBS were determined by extensive NMR and HRESIMS spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configurations of the separated enantiomers (+)-1a and (-)-1b were solved by comparison of the experimental ECD spectra with those of the TDDFT-ECD calculated spectra. The new compounds 1 and 2 represent rare cases of PBS bearing a methylsulfinyl group, which was distinct from the commonly-observed PBS structurally. All the isolated compounds 1-7 were evaluated their antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities. As a result, the tested compounds showed selective antimicrobial activity against several pathogenic bacteria and fungi with the MIC (minimum inhibiting concentrations) values ranging from 2 to 64 μg/mL. Moreover, enantiomers (+)-1a and (-)-1b, together with compound 2, exhibited promising cytotoxicity against MKN-45 and HepG2 cell lines, respectively, indicating that the methylsulfinyl substituent enhanced cytotoxicity to a certain degree.

Six isoquinoline alkaloids were identified from the alkaloid-rich fraction of Corydalis hendersonii Hemsl, including five previously undescribed isoquinoline alkaloids hendersines J-M (1a, 1b, and 2-4) and isobicuculline (5), a compound reported for the first time from a natural source. Their structures were elucidated based on spectroscopic analysis of HR-ESI-MS, 1D and 2D NMR, X-ray diffraction, and ECD. Compounds 1a and 1b represent a pair of rare three-nitrogen isoquinoline alkaloid enantiomers, while 2 and 3 are isoquinoline alkaloids featuring a benzo-fused N-heterocycle.

This research investigates boronated tryptophans as potential boron delivery agents for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) of cancer. We synthesized both enantiomers of 5- and 6-boronotryptophans ( and ) using simple and inexpensive methods. Their uptake was assessed in two human cancer cell lines, CAL27 (head and neck cancer) and U87-MG (brain cancer), and compared to l--boronophenylalanine (l-BPA) as a reference.

A pair of dinor-sesquiterpene enantiomers (1a/1b), eight pairs of guaiane-type sesquiterpenes enantiomers (2a/2b, 3a/3b, 4a/4b, 5a/5b, 6a/6b, 7a/7b, 8a/8b, 9a/9b) and two guaiane-type sesquiterpenes (10, 11), including eleven undescribed ones (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 4a, 5b, 6a, 10, and 11), were isolated from the aqueous extract of Alismatis Rhizoma. The structures were elucidated by combining 1D and 2D NMR and HRESIMS spectroscopic data. The absolute configurations were determined by experimental and calculated ECD spectra, [Mo(OAc)]-induced ECD spectral analysis, and comparison of the experimental ECD spectra with those of similar analogs.

In our effort to establish a direct synthetic approach for bis(dihydridoborate) complexes of first-row transition metals, we have investigated the reactivity of [Cp*Fe(dppe)Cl] (dppe =1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) with Na[BHL] (L =2-mercaptopyridine (mp) and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (mbz)) that led to the formation of iron(II) dihydridoborate complexes, [Cp*Fe{κ-S,H,H-(HBH(L))}] 1 a-b (L=mp (1 a) and L=mbz (1 b)). Further, in an attempt to isolate the bis(dihydridoborate) complex of iron by the insertion of borane into the κ-N,S-chelated iron complex, [(dppe)Fe{κ-N,S-(mp)}] (2), we have isolated and structurally characterized a rare example of dimeric iron bis(dihydridoborate) complex, [Fe{κ-S,H,H-(HBH(mp))}], ΛΔ/ΔΛ-3 as pair of enantiomers. Interestingly, these enantiomers ΛΔ/ΔΛ-3 have two trans-[Fe{κ-S,H,H-(HBH(mp))}] moieties bridged through sulfur atoms of 2-mercaptopyridinyl ligands, where the iron centres are hepta-coordinated.

Electronic address:

Thirteen new microperfuranones, including five pairs of enantiomers, (±)-nigenolides A-E (1a/1b-5a/5b), and three racemate nigenolides F-H (6-8), together with four known analogues (9-12) were isolated from a deep-sea-derived Aspergillus niger 3A00562. The absolute configurations of the five pairs of enantiomers were determined by the comparison of the calculated and experimental ECD spectra. Compounds 3a, 4a, 4b, and 12 were able to inhibit RSL3-induced ferroptosis.
