Microcontrollers and field-programmable gate arrays have been largely leveraged in scientific instrumentation since decades. Recent advancements in the performance of these programmable digital devices, with hundreds of I/O pins, up to millions of logic cells, >10 Gb/s connectivity, and hundreds of MHz multiple clocks, have been accelerating this trend, extending the range of functions. The diversification of devices from very low-cost 8-bit microcontrollers up to 32-bit ARM-based ones and a system of chip combining programmable logic with processors make them ubiquitous in modern electronic systems, addressing diverse challenges from ultra-low power operation, with sub-µA quiescent current in sleep mode for portable and Internet of Things applications, to high-performance computing, such as in machine vision. In this Review, the main motivations (compactness, re-configurability, parallelization, low latency for sub-ns timing, and real-time control), the possible approaches of the adoption of embedded devices, and the achievable performances are discussed. Relevant examples of applications in opto-electronics, physics experiments, impedance, vibration, and temperature sensing from the recent literature are also reviewed. From this bird-eye view, key paradigms emerge, such as the blurring of boundaries between digital platforms and the pervasiveness of machine learning algorithms, significantly fostered by the possibility to be run in embedded devices for distributing intelligence in the environment.

Electron spin resonance (ESR) is a powerful tool for characterizing and manipulating spin systems, but commercial ESR spectrometers can be inflexible and designed to work in narrow frequency bands. This work presents a spectrometer built from off-the-shelf parts that, when coupled with easy-to-design resonators, enables ESR over a broad frequency range, including at frequencies outside the standard bands. It can operate at either a single frequency or at two frequencies simultaneously.

Oxygen vacancies in Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskites (PV) [AO][ABO] play a pivotal role in engineering functional properties and thus understanding the relationship between oxygen-vacancy distribution and physical properties can open up new strategies for fine manipulation of structure-driven functionalities. However, the structural origin of preferential distribution for oxygen vacancies in RP structures is not well understood, notably in the single-layer ( = 1) RP-structure. Herein, the = 1 RP phase SrNdZnO was rationally designed and structurally characterized by combining three-dimensional (3D) electron diffraction and neutron powder diffraction.

This article describes an optically adjustable, dual complementary molecular TRANSFER and COMPLEMENT logic gate as well as an extremely rare design of excitation-modulated logic systems using a pyrene coupled bis(indolyl)methane derivative (1) in Brij-58 micelles, triggered by different chemical stimuli. We have looked into the optical response of the probe molecule towards variety of analytes, including OH, CN, Hg, EDTA ., at various excitation channels, in order to achieve this goal.

State Key Laboratory of Particle Detection and Electronics, University of Science and Technology of China, No. 96, Jinzhai Road, Hefei, Anhui, China.

We present a fully digital servo optimized for ultra-stable laser frequency stabilization. Experiments such as optical clock experiments can achieve high laser frequency stability, imposing high bandwidth, high precision, and low noise requirements on servo systems. The laser system utilizes the Pound-Drever-Hall method, employing an ultra-stable cavity to generate an error signal for servo input.

In this work, we implemented a short-reach real-time optical communication system using MLP for pre-distortion. Lookup table (LUT) algorithms are commonly employed for pre-distortion in intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) systems. However, storage limitations typically restrict the LUT pattern length to 9, limiting its effectiveness in compensating for nonlinear effects.
