Background: The impact of ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) on breastfeeding outcomes may be overestimated and surgical treatment in newborns remains a controversial topic. The aim of the present study was to assess and quantify the impact of ankyloglossia in newborns on breastfeeding self-efficacy at 14 days of life.
Methods: A birth cohort study was conducted involving mothers and newborns soon after childbirth at a public hospital in the city of Canoas, southern Brazil.

Introduction: There is a paucity of literature on pre-adolescent paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM), PVFM is a sub-type of inducible laryngeal obstruction. Studies typically focus on older patients, however the discovery of this entity in pre-adolescent pediatric patients has led to more questions about how this entity manifests differently and is treated differently in younger populations. Initially considered psychosomatic and commonly mistaken for asthma, PVFM etiology is now thought to be associated underlying neurologic conditions and may have irritant triggers with proposed mechanisms related to laryngeal hypersensitivity.

Purpose: Compare infant suction in babies with and without ankyloglossia using a microprocessor-controlled pressure sensor coupled to a pacifier.
Methods: Fifty-five infants from 0 to 2 months of age underwent clinical examination for ankyloglossia, after which they were offered a silicone pacifier connected to the pressure acquisitiondevice and suction activity was recorded. Thus, we extracted the frequency of sucks within a burst, the average suck duration, the burst duration, the number of sucks per burst, the maximum amplitude of sucks per burst and the inter-burst interval.

Ankyloglossia, or tongue-tie, is a variation in the anatomy of the lingual frenulum that restricts tongue movement. It is recognised as a cause of breastfeeding difficulty. We prospectively collected data from a specialist tongue-tie assessment clinic and evaluated mothers' experience using a questionnaire.

Between 1997 and 2012, the diagnoses of ankyloglossia and the indication for frenotomy increased by ˃800%. About 38% of diagnosed cases are surgically treated. Breastfeeding promotion includes evaluating maternal hereditary and personal history of breastfeeding, breast structure, endocrinological physiology, emotional well-being of the mother, breastfeeding technique, quality and quantity of milk, and the newborn's ability to latch on and suckle.
