Candida-associated denture stomatitis is a recurring disease affecting up to 67% of denture wearers. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) remains the main material employed in the fabrication of dentures due to its desirable physical, mechanical, and aesthetic properties. However, the improvement of its antimicrobial properties remains a challenge. To address this need, we developed PMMA composite filled with piezoelectric nanoparticles of barium titanate (BaTiO) for therapeutic effects. biofilms were cultivated on the surface of the composites under continuous cyclic mechanical loading to activate the piezoelectric charges and to resemble mastication patterns. The interactions between biofilms and biomaterials were evaluated by measuring the biofilm biomass, metabolic activity, and the number of viable cells. To explore the antifungal mechanisms, changes in the expression of genes encoding adhesins and superoxide dismutase were assessed using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. With the addition of piezoelectric nanoparticles, we observed a significant reduction in the biofilm formation and interference in the yeast-to-hyphae transition compared to the standard PMMA. Moreover, we observed that the cyclic deformation of biomaterial surfaces without antifungal agents produced increased biomass, metabolic activity, and a number of viable cells compared to the static/no-deformed surfaces. Cyclic deformation appears to be a novel mechanobiological signal that enables pathogenicity and virulence of cells with increased expression of the yeast-to-hyphae transition genes. The outcome of this study opens new opportunities for the design of antifungal dentures for improved clinical service and reduced need for cleaning methods.

This review explores the integration of polymer materials into piezoelectric composite structures, focusing on their application in sensor technologies, and wearable electronics. Piezoelectric composites combining ceramic phases like BaTiO, KNN, or PZT with polymers such as PVDF exhibit significant potential due to their enhanced flexibility, processability, and electrical performance. The synergy between the high piezoelectric sensitivity of ceramics and the mechanical flexibility of polymers enables the development of advanced materials for biomedical devices, energy conversion, and smart infrastructure applications.

Magnetoelectric (ME) devices combining piezoelectric and magnetostrictive materials have emerged as powerful tools to miniaturize and enhance sensing and communication technologies. This paper examines recent developments in bulk acoustic wave (BAW) and surface acoustic wave (SAW) ME devices, which demonstrate unique capabilities in ultra-sensitive magnetic sensing, compact antennas, and quantum applications. Leveraging the mechanical resonance of BAW and SAW modes, ME sensors achieve the femto- to pico-Tesla sensitivity ideal for biomedical applications, while ME antennas, operating at acoustic resonance, allow significant size reduction, with high radiation gain and efficiency, which is suited for bandwidth-restricted applications.

Recently, Organ-on-a-Chip (OoC) platforms have arisen as an increasingly relevant experimental tool for successfully replicating human physiology and disease. However, there is a lack of a standard technology to monitor the OoC parameters, especially in a non-invasive and label-free way. Photoacoustic (PA) systems can be considered an alternative and accurate assessment method for OoC platforms.

Addressing the concurrent repair of cartilage and subchondral bone presents a significant challenge yet is crucial for the effective treatment of severe joint injuries. This study introduces a novel biodegradable composite scaffold, integrating piezoelectric poly-l-lactic acid (pPLLA) with strontium-enriched silicate bioceramic (SrSiO). This innovative scaffold continually releases bioactive Sr and SiO ions while generating an electrical charge under low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) stimulation, a clinically recognized method.

The EuDyGeO, EuLaGeO and EuHoGeO powder were obtained through a solid-state reaction method via multistep firing of stoichiometric ratios of EuO, GeO, DyO, LaO and HoO in open atmosphere at temperatures from 800 to 1150 °C. The thermal behaviour, phase formation, SEM/EDX analysis, photoluminescence properties, Curie tempereture, dielectric and piezoelectric properties of the samples were investigated by TG/DTA, XRD, SEM, PL, TG/DTA, LCR-meter and d-meter, respectively. The germenates having triclinic crystal system have D→F, D→F, D→F, D→F transitions of Eu ions.
