The analysis of stable isotopes in bone collagen allows us to infer the diet of the animals studied. This dataset consists of isotopic signatures (δC and δN) obtained by isotope ratio mass spectrometry from the skeletal remains of 42 equines (horse, ass and their hybrids) from the Can Roqueta site (Sabadell, Northeast Iberian Peninsula). Their chronology spans from Late Bronze Age to Late Roman Period, with particular emphasis on the Early Iron Age. These animals were found in storage silos and graves and were probably sacrificed as ritual offerings. The isotopic values are accompanied by data to assess the quality of the collagen analyzed. This fills a gap in equine isotopic values for this region and chronology, which may be of use to archaeologists interested in the study of livestock management or palaeodiet.

Marine mammal populations, particularly the common dolphin Delphinus delphis in the North-East Atlantic, play an essential role as indicators of ecosystem health. Effective monitoring of these populations is essential for assessing anthropogenic impacts, especially in the context of current threats such as fisheries bycatch. The MOTHY drift model, initially designed for oil spills and then adapted to carcass drift, is being used in part of the North East Atlantic (Bay of Biscay, English Chanel, and North Sea) to estimate the bycatch mortality of common dolphins.

The promotion of food from underutilized plants can help combat biodiversity loss, foster cultural preservation, and empower farmers in the face of market pressures and sustainable production conditions. The nutritional and aromatic characterization of two undervalued types of fruits, differentiated by their apple and pear shapes, has been carried out. Official Association of Analytical Communities methods have been used for proximate composition and mineral analysis determinations, and gas chromatography was used for the analysis of volatile components in three states of ripeness and compared with the aromas of fresh apple and quince jam.

The mitochondrial genome sequence of Manchurian Hare ().

Mitochondrial DNA B Resour

September 2024

College of Wildlife and Protected Area, Northeast Forestry University, Harbin, China.

The Manchurian hare () is widely distributed in eastern Russia and northeastern China, but due to limited research, its taxonomic status remains somewhat ambiguous. The mitochondrial genome of the Manchurian hare was 16,705 bp in length, which was consisted of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes and one control region. The overall nucleotide composition is 31.

Geographic and sociodemographic aspects may influence the natural history and epidemiology of mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). The main objective in this work was to evaluate the clinical, molecular, and geographic profile of MPS in a population from Ceará (Northeast Brazil). For this, we have performed a descriptive cross-sectional study based on clinical evaluation, interviews with patients and/or family members, and review of medical records of 76 MPS patients.

Zincophilic Nanospheres Assembled as Solid-Electrolyte Interphase on Zn Metal Anodes for Reversible High-rate Zn-Ion Storage.

Small

October 2024

Key Laboratory of Multifunctional Nanomaterials and Smart Systems, Advanced Materials Division, Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech and Nano-Bionics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Suzhou, 215123, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) are emerging as a strong alternative to lithium-ion batteries due to their fast ionic conductivity, safety, and low cost, but they face challenges from zinc dendrite accumulation, which degrades battery performance.
  • The study introduces a protective layer of ZnSnO hollow nanospheres on zinc anodes that enhances zinc ion deposition, improves binding energy, and reduces ion diffusion distance, ultimately boosting reaction kinetics.
  • The resulting Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitor (ZHSC) demonstrates impressive durability, achieving 4000 cycles at 10 mA/cm² with a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.31% and capacity retention of 79.6%, presenting a promising solution for better battery lifespan
