By altering some synthesis variables, the morphology and structural properties of anodic TiOnanotube arrays (TiONTs) can be tailored to a specific application. This study aims to investigate the effect of electrolyte-containing ions from human plasma and annealing temperature on structural, morphological, and mechanical parameters of TiONTs films, targeting its potential biomedical applications. Bio-inspired TiONTs were grown from Tiand its Ti6Al4V alloy by potentiostatic anodization in the recently developed SBF-based electrolyte, maintained at 10 °C and 40 °C. The thermal investigation was performed by TGA/DSC and used to define the phase transition temperatures used for annealing (450 °C and 650 °C). Morphological and structural parameters were evaluated by FE-SEM, XRD, contact angle measurements, and nanoindentation. Results show that self-organized as-formed TiONTs were grown under all synthesis conditions with different wettability profiles for each substrate group. At 450 °C annealing temperature, the beginning of nanostructures collapse starts, becoming evident at 650 °C. The nanoindentation characterization reveals that both electrolyte and thermal annealing exhibited low effects on the hardness and Young's modulus. The tailoring of specific properties by different synthesis conditions could allow the individualization of treatments and better performance.

Neurodegeneration in glaucoma patients is clinically identified through longitudinal assessment of structure-function changes, including intraocular pressure, cup-to-disc ratios from fundus images, and optical coherence tomography imaging of the retinal nerve fiber layer. Use of human post-mortem ocular tissue for basic research is rising in the glaucoma field, yet there are challenges in assessing disease stage and severity, since tissue donations with informed consent are often unaccompanied by detailed pre-mortem clinical information. Further, the interpretation of disease severity based solely on anatomical and morphological assessments by histology can be affected by differences in death-to-preservation time and tissue processing.

This study explores the enhanced adsorption performance of activated carbon felt (ACF) for Cu(II) and Cd(II) ions, achieved using a dual-synergistic approach combining MnO coating and plasma treatment. ACF's intrinsic properties, including a high surface area (~ 1000-2000 m²/g), large porosity, and excellent mechanical stability, make it a promising material for environmental applications. However, its limited surface functional groups hinder its adsorption efficiency for heavy metals.

The successful development of a metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived Co/CoO/C core-shell composite integrated into laser-induced graphitic (LIG) carbon electrodes for electrochemical sensing is reported. The sensors are fabricated via a direct laser scribing technique using a UV laser (355 nm wavelength) to induce the photothermolysis of rationally selected ZIF-67 into the LIG matrix. Electrochemical characterization reveals that the incorporation of the laser-scribed ZIF-67-derived composite on the electrode surface reduces the impedance more than 100 times compared with bare LIG sensors.

Morphological profiling has recently demonstrated remarkable potential for identifying the biological activities of small molecules. Alongside the fully supervised and self-supervised machine learning methods recently proposed for bioactivity prediction from Cell Painting image data, we introduce here a semisupervised contrastive (SemiSupCon) learning approach. This approach combines the strengths of using biological annotations in supervised contrastive learning and leveraging large unannotated image data sets with self-supervised contrastive learning.
