High traffic volume is one of the main contributors to wildlife-vehicle collision (WVC) and wildlife mortality on roads. Government shelter-in-place (SIP) orders have been used to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19, resulting in unprecedented reductions in global traffic volumes. Using traffic and collision data from four US states (California, Idaho, Maine, and Washington), we investigated changes in total WVC, following the state and local SIP orders. From mid-March to mid-April 2020, these orders have resulted in up to 71%, 63%, 73%, and 72% reduction in driving, as measured by vehicle miles traveled (VMT), in CA, ID, ME, and WA respectively. The daily WVC rates from the 4 weeks prior to SIP orders going into effect, to the 4 weeks after, declined 34%, with 21, 36, 44, and 33% declines for CA, ID, ME, and WA, respectively. For mountain lions ( in CA, there was a 58% decline in mortality during the traffic reduction. The changes in WVC from 1 month pre-SIP orders to 1 month post-order only occurred in 2020 and not 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, or 2019, suggesting that the reductions were associated with the reductions in traffic. The measured declines in WVC reversed in ME and WA during May, June and July 2020, paralleling reversals in traffic volumes. A 34% reduction in WVC would potentially equate to 10s of millions fewer vertebrates killed on US roadways during one month of traffic reduction, representing an unintentional conservation action unprecedented in modern times.

Empathy is an aspect of social cognition which has gained much attention to explain sexual violence perpetration, with research resulting in mixed and contradictory findings. Another aspect of social cognition, which has been linked to, and even used synonymously with, cognitive empathy is Theory of Mind (ToM). However, research is severely lacking on the role which ToM may play in sexual violence.

Biofilms are indispensable ecological habitats for microbes that have garnered global attention and play a potential role in influencing the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen. However, the biogeochemical significance of biofilms and the mechanisms by which they regulate nitrogen cycling remain elusive. In this study, we utilized DNA-stable isotope probing (DNA-SIP) labelling techniques in conjunction with metagenomics to reveal a nitrifying ecological niche in biofilms taken from the Yangtze Estuary, with those from sediment and water samples for comparison.

The community treatment order (CTO) is a legally mandated approach to community based psychiatric care that has been in existence for over 20 years in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Changes to legislation of CTOs implemented in 2015, has resulted in bolstered use of this approach to treat substance induced psychosis (SIP). Treatment plans implemented with the use of CTOs in the present study include pharmacotherapy, in the form of long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAI-AP).

The complexities encountered in microbial metabolic engineering continue to elude prediction and design. Unravelling these complexities requires strategies that go beyond conventional genetics. Using multiplex mutagenesis with double stranded (ds) DNA, we extend the multiplex repertoire previously pioneered using single strand (ss) oligonucleotides.

Nonmechanical fast response optical beam steering technology is increasingly essential for telecommunications, imaging systems, optical sensing, displays, and military applications. Polymer network liquid crystal (PNLC) beam steering can achieve submillisecond response times but faces limitations due to scattering issues arising from the refractive index mismatch between the polymer network and the liquid crystals (LCs). In this article, we demonstrate a scattering-free, fast-response LC beam steering by using polymer brushes to stabilize the gradient refractive index.
