A new etherified starch, δ-hydroxybutyl starch (δ-HBS), was prepared by utilising 4-chlorobutan-1-ol as the etherifying reagent. The method of Zeisel gas chromatography for the determination of the molar substitution was described. This technique offers a simple and rapid method for quantitative analysis with reproducible results. Meanwhile, the mechanism of the Zeisel reaction was also investigated.

Background: There are no cures for Alzheimer's disease (AD), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by elevation of beta-amyloid and tau proteins besides neuronal death and causing cognitive impairment. Phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) is a cyclic guanosine monophosphate-degrading enzyme involved in numerous biological pathways including those relevant to memory formation. PDE5 inhibition offers the potential to attenuate AD progression by acting at the downstream level of beta-amyloid and tau elevation.

A novel glucomannan, named ATSW-1, was obtained from Allii Tuberosi Semen by ion and gel permeation chromatography purification. Its structure was characterized using high-performance chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The in vitro immune activities of ATSW-1 were examined using the Cell Counting Kit-8, the neutral red phagocytosis assay, and the secretion of related cytokines.

Sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) are widely used in the biomedical field but pose an environmental risk as ecotoxic pollutants. Developing eco-friendly methods to degrade SAs into harmless compounds is crucial. In this work, biochar (BC) was prepared from rice straw via pyrolysis and used to support S-nZVI, thereby forming the S-nZVI/BC composites.

Despite the success in COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, direct local delivery of mRNA into the lung by inhalation would greatly reinforce the treatment of pulmonary pathogens and diseases. Herein, we developed lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) from degradable ionizable glycerolipids for potent pulmonary mRNA delivery via nebulization.

This study investigates the synthesis of corn starch nanocrystals (SNCs) via sulfuric acid hydrolysis. Esterification of oleic acid (OA) with SNCs was carried out using Maghnite-H as a catalyst, a non-polluting, eco-friendly proton-exchanged montmorillonite-based green catalyst suitable for various chemical processes. Optimization of synthesis parameters, including reaction temperature, duration, and catalyst quantity, was conducted using response surface methodology (RSM) with a central composite design incorporating three factors and three levels.
