Background: The Olympic preparation of athletes has been highly influenced by COVID and post-COVID syndrome. As the complex screening of athletes is essential for safe and successful sports, we aimed to repeat the 2019-year sports cardiology screening of the Olympic Swim Team before the Olympics and to compare the results of COVID and non-COVID athletes.
Methods: Patient history, electrocardiogram, laboratory tests, body composition analysis, echocardiography, cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) were performed. We used time-ranking points to compare swimming performance.
Results: From April 2019, we examined 46 elite swimmers (24 ± 4 years). Fourteen swimmers had COVID infection; all cases were mild. During CPET there was no difference in the performance of COVID (male: VO max 55 ± 4 vs. 56.5 ± 5 mL/kg/min, = 0.53; female: VO max 54.6 ± 4 vs. 56 ± 5.5 mL/kg/min, = 0.86) vs. non-COVID athletes (male VO max 56.7 ± 5 vs. 55.5 ± 4.5 mL/kg/min, = 0.50; female 49.6 ± 3 vs. 50.7 ± 2.6 mL/kg/min, = 0.47) between 2019 and 2021. When comparing the time results of the National Championships, 54.8% of the athletes showed an improvement ( = 0.75).
Conclusions: COVID infection with short-term detraining did not affect the performance of well-trained swimmers. According to our results, the COVID pandemic did not impair the effectiveness of the preparation for the Tokyo Olympics.

Both enantiomers of 2-ethylquinazolin-4-ones bearing -CHO/CDO and CHO/CHO phenyl groups at the N3 position were prepared. These are isotopic atropisomeric compounds based on a remote and conformationally flexible H/D and C/C discrimination, and it was found that a CHCl solution of -CHO/CDO derivative shows a slight specific optical rotation. Furthermore, diastereomeric quinazolinone derivatives bearing a chiral carbon were prepared, and their stereochemical purities and rotational stability as well as the isotopic atropisomerism were verified by H NMR and chiral high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses.

The intrinsic temperature dependence of Raman-active modes in carbon nanotubes (CNTs), particularly the radial breathing mode (RBM), has been a topic of a long-standing controversy. In this study, we prepared suspended individual CNTs to investigate how their Raman spectra depend on temperature and to understand the effects of environmental conditions on this dependency. We analyzed the intrinsic temperature dependence of the main Raman-active modes, including the RBM, the moiré-activated R feature, and the G-band in double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) after complete desorption of air.

We investigated the cost-effectiveness of treating iron deficiency anemia (IDA) with ferric citrate hydrate (FC) in Japan. We employed four treatment strategies: switching from sodium ferrous citrate (SF) to FC at (1) 500 mg (approximately 120 mg of iron) per day or (2) 1000 mg (approximately 240 mg of iron) per day in patients with SF-induced nausea/vomiting, or starting treatment with FC at (3) 500 mg/day or (4) 1000 mg/day. We evaluated the cost-effectiveness of these strategies compared with SF 100 mg (100 mg of iron) per day.

Background And Purpose: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that is challenging to treat, and novel drugs are needed for this condition. Previously, a chronic vicarious social defeat stress (cVSDS) mouse model exhibits IBS-like symptoms. Also agonists of the opioid δ-receptor exert anti-stress effects in rodents with minimal adverse effects.

Previously, it was reported that mRNA/cationic liposome complexes (mRNA lipoplexes) composed of the cationic triacyl lipid, 11-((1,3-bis(dodecanoyloxy)-2-((dodecanoyloxy)methyl)propan-2-yl)amino)-,,- trimethyl-11-oxoundecan-1-aminium bromide (TC-1-12), with 1,2-dioleoyl-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine and poly(ethylene glycol) cholesteryl ether, induce high protein expression in human cervical carcinoma HeLa cells. In the present study, the authors aimed to optimize mRNA transfection using TC-1-12-based mRNA lipoplexes. mRNA lipoplexes were prepared at various charge ratios (+:-) using modified ethanol injection (MEI) and thin-film hydration (TFH) methods and compared the protein expression efficiency after transfection of HeLa cells with the developed mRNA lipoplexes.
