Evaluation of professional practices in the use of mexiletine for the management of childhood myotonia in French pediatric neuromuscular centers (MEXI-PEDI survey).

Arch Pediatr

January 2025

CMR Neuromusculaire, Service de génétique médicale, Hôpital Estaing, CHU de Clermont-Ferrand, Clermont-Ferrand, France. Electronic address:

Background: Myotonia is the main feature of both myotonic dystrophy (DM) and non-dystrophic myotonia (NDM). It is felt as stiffness, pain, fatigue, and weakness. In France, mexiletine, a non-selective voltage-gated sodium channel blocker, is approved for the treatment of myotonia in adults with NDM, and it has a temporary recommendation for use in the symptomatic treatment of DM in adults.

Background: A positive pathologic retroperitoneal surgical resection margin in the retroperitonealized colon is reported to predict distant metastases. However, no studies have investigated retroperitoneal surgical resection margin positivity on computed tomography colonography and its prognostic significance.

Methods: Patients who underwent primary resection for ascending or descending colon cancer at our institution between 2013 and 2018 were retrospectively evaluated (n = 206).

Background: To evaluate the effect and factors associated with the reactivation of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) after intravitreal conbercept or aflibercept.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 176 eyes diagnosed with ROP and treated with anti-VEGF therapy between January 2018 and September 2022. The rate of reactivation and complications were assessed during the follow-up period.

The big potassium (BK) channels remain open with a small limiting probability of ~ 10 at minimal Ca and negative voltages < -100 mV. The molecular origin and functional significance of such "intrinsic opening" are not understood. Here we combine atomistic simulations and electrophysiological experiments to show that the intrinsic opening of BK channels is an inherent property of the vapor barrier, generated by hydrophobic dewetting of the BK inner pore in the deactivated state.

Background: In March 2022, a concerning rise in cases of unexplained pediatric hepatitis was reported in multiple countries. Cases were defined as acute hepatitis with serum transaminases >500 U/L (aspartate transaminase [AST] or alanine transaminase [ALT]) in children aged 16 years or younger. We explored a simple federated data analytics method to search for evidence of unreported cases using routinely held data.
