Theory of Acoustic Emission From Phase Transformations.

A theoretical framework is developed within which it is possible to predict the dynamic elastic displacement field (acoustic emission) for a phase transformation in which there is a change of both crystal structure (elastic constants) and shape (density). An integral equation is presented for the acoustic emission displacement field due to formation of inhomogeneous inclusions. This integral equation is solved by expressing the source in multipolar form and using the Eshelby equivalent inclusion method to estimate the dynamic multipolar coefficients. Expressions for the source of elastic radiation are explicitly calculated for small isotropic spherical and ellipsoidal inclusions embedded in an isotropic matrix. These expressions are used for qualitative interpretation of recent experiments on martensitic transformations in steels and for identifying the information that may be deduced about transformation dynamics from quantitative measurements of acoustic emission.

Owing to the differences in sedimentary environments in the mining areas of western China, the mechanical properties of rocks in this region are significantly different from those in the central and eastern regions. Therefore, uniaxial cyclic loading-unloading tests were conducted on fine sandstone found in many roof rocks to study the evolution laws of mechanical properties, deformation characteristics, acoustic emission (AE) parameters, and energy under cyclic loading and unloading conditions. The accumulated residual strain, dissipative energy, acoustic emission cumulative ringing counts, and cumulative energy were introduced to characterize the degree of rock damage.

Background: It has been claimed that tacrolimus may have harmful effects on the auditory system, where it has been linked to ototoxicity and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). We evaluated silent SNHL in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) receiving tacrolimus and the different factors affecting it compared to healthy controls.

Materials And Methods: In this case control study, hearing functions were studied in 42 KTRs receiving tacrolimus as maintenance immunosuppressive therapy for more than 3 months in comparison to 27 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects using tympanometry, pure-tone audiometry (PTA), extended high frequency audiometry (EHFA), and transient evoked oto-acoustic emissions (TEOAEs).
