The Songkhla Lake Basin (SLB) located in Southern Thailand, has been increasingly polluted by urban and industrial wastewater, while the lake water has been intensively used. Here, we aimed to investigate cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins in the SLB. Ten cyanobacteria isolates were identified as genus based on16S rDNA analysis. All isolates harbored microcystin genes, while five of them carried saxitoxin genes. On day 15 of culturing, the specific growth rate and content were 0.2-0.3 per day and 4 µg/mL. The total extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) content was 0.37-0.49 µg/mL. The concentration of soluble EPS (sEPS) was 2 times higher than that of bound EPS (bEPS). The protein proportion in both sEPS and bEPS was higher than the carbohydrate proportion. The average of intracellular microcystins (IMCs) was 0.47 pg/cell on day 15 of culturing, while extracellular microcystins (EMCs) were undetectable. The IMCs were dramatically produced at the exponential phase, followed by EMCs release at the late exponential phase. On day 30, the total microcystins (MCs) production reached 2.67 pg/cell. Based on liquid chromatograph-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry, three new MCs variants were proposed. This study is the first report of both decarbamoylsaxitoxin (dcSTX) and new MCs congeners synthesized by .

Heavy metals pose significant threats to ecosystems and human health due to their persistence and bioaccumulation. In Thailand, rapid industrialization, extensive agriculture, and urban development have exacerbated heavy metal pollution in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. This systematic review, conducted according to PRISMA guidelines, evaluates study designs and methodologies to assess heavy metal bioaccumulation in Thai fauna, with a focus on ecological and health impacts.

Article Synopsis
  • - CDI is a widespread healthcare-associated infection that significantly affects the elderly, posing serious health and economic issues, yet detailed data on its impact are scarce.
  • - Using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, the analysis from 2000 to 2019 showed CDI resulted in about 18,181 deaths and 252,709 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) among older adults, with the Americas facing the highest burden.
  • - The findings highlight the urgent need for specialized public health strategies to address the rising CDI rates, particularly in high-sociodemographic index (SDI) regions and the Americas.

  • Recent advancements in metabolomics and genomics are enhancing our understanding of phytocannabinoids, like CBD and THC, as potential treatments for neurological conditions including anxiety, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • A comprehensive review of existing literature utilizes bioinformatics and network pharmacology to explore how these compounds modulate neural activity and their interactions with various receptors.
  • Findings indicate that cannabis compounds vary significantly in their effects, with CBD showing promise in protecting against neurodegenerative diseases, but the potential for THC abuse remains a concern documented across various studies.

Foodborne illnesses occur due to the contamination of fresh, frozen, or processed food products by some pathogens. Among several pathogens responsible for the illnesses, is one of the lethal bacteria that endangers public health. Several preexisting and novel technologies, especially non-thermal technologies are being studied for their antimicrobial effects, particularly toward .

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the significant burden of alcohol-related issues like liver disease and alcohol use disorder (AUD) among young women, a demographic identified as particularly vulnerable compared to men.
  • Utilizing data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, researchers analyzed prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years of alcohol-associated cirrhosis, liver cancer from alcohol, and AUD in young women, with findings organized by region and sociodemographic factors.
  • Results show that AUD has the highest prevalence rates, followed by alcohol-associated cirrhosis and liver cancer; Central Europe shows the highest burdens, indicating an urgent need for targeted public health strategies to address these issues in young women.
