The electrochemical promotion of the CH + O total oxidation reaction over a Pt catalyst, interfaced to yttrium stabilized zirconia (YSZ), has been studied at 0.25 mbar and = 650 K using near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) as an method. The electrochemical promoter effect is linked to the presence of a several layers thick graphitic overlayer that forms on the Pt surface in the presence of CH. Our NAP-XPS investigation reveals that electrochemical pumping of the Pt/YSZ catalyst, using a positive potential, leads to the spillover of oxygen surface species from the YSZ support onto the surface of the Pt electrode. Based on the XP spectra, the spillover species on Pt is identical to oxygen chemisorbed from the gas-phase.

Rectal or cryptonephridial complexes have evolved repeatedly in arthropods, including in beetles where they occur in ∼190,000 species of Cucujiformia + Bostrichoidea, and Lepidoptera where they occur in ∼160,000 species. Sections of the Malpighian/renal tubules coat the outer surface of the rectum, acting as powerful recycling systems of the gut contents, recovering water and specific solutes. There are hints that a rectal complex evolved independently within another beetle group, Scarabaeoidea.

Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which causes the sexually transmitted infection gonorrhea and Neisseria meningitidis, a leading cause of bacterial meningitis and septicemia, are closely related human-restricted pathogens that inhabit distinct primary mucosal niches. While successful vaccines against invasive meningococcal disease have been available for decades, the rapid rise in antibiotic resistance has led to an urgent need to develop an effective gonococcal vaccine. Several surface antigens are shared among these two pathogens, making cross-species protection an exciting prospect.

Residual aluminum (Al) is a growing pollutant in nanofiltration (NF) membrane-based drinking water treatment. To investigate the impact of distinct Al species fouling layers on gypsum scaling during NF, gypsum scaling tests were conducted on bare and three Al-conditioned (AlCl-, Al, and Al-) membranes. Bacterial blight of pomegranate caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. punicae poses significant challenges to sustainable cultivation, necessitating eco-friendly management strategies, and this study explores the role of the phylloplane microbiome in disease suppression through metabarcoding, traditional microbiology, and antibacterial screening of microbial candidates.
