Purpose: Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine caused by an abnormal immune response to gluten proteins and is often characterized by gastrointestinal symptoms. Food allergy (FA) is an adverse immune sensitivity to ingested food proteins leading to inflammation in various organs including the gastrointestinal tract. The relationship between CD and FA remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and clinical relevance of immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated food sensitization in children with CD.

Methods: Fifty-nine children diagnosed with CD were reviewed for clinical symptoms and evidence of IgE-sensitization to food and airborne allergens using the PolyCheck method.

Results: IgE-mediated sensitization has been diagnosed in 20.3% of children with CD (CD/ A). In the CD/A group, 58.3% of children were sensitized to food and 66.7% to airborne allergens. Further, 41.7% of patients with CD and allergy reported gastrointestinal tract symptoms associated with the ingestion of sensitizing foods. Analysis of the clinical status revealed that the incidence of other allergic disorders in the CD/A group was as follows: atopic dermatitis (33.3%), asthma (25.0%), and allergic rhinitis (16.7%). The percentage of eosinophils was significantly higher in the CD/A group than in the CD group (0.33±0.25 vs. 0.11±0.09; =0.006).

Conclusion: The diagnosis of CD does not exclude FA. The gastrointestinal symptoms in children with CD may be the result of both CD and FA; therefore, children with CD should be evaluated for the presence of FA regardless of age.

Chagas disease (CD), a parasitic infection, may have ocular repercussions in its cardiologic form, since a history of heart disease of other etiologies already has been established as a risk factor for neuropathies and maculopathies. The aim of the present study was to investigate preclinical structural and vascular optic nerve head (ONH) and macular parameters in patients with chronic CD. Nineteen patients with CD and 19 healthy subjects were evaluated with optical coherence tomography, optical coherence tomography angiography, and Laguna ONhE® software.

Direct engulfment of synapses by overactivated microglia due to cadmium exposure and the protective role of Nrf2.

Cadmium (Cd), a notorious environmental pollutant, has been linked to neurological disorders, but the underlying mechanism remains elusive. We aimed to explore the role of microglia in Cd-induced synaptic damages at environmentally relevant doses and whether microglia directly engulf synaptic structures. Nrf2 is deeply implicated in the status of microglial activation; therefore, we also investigated whether it is involved in the above process.

With many fascinating characteristics, such as color-tunability, narrow-band emission, and low-cost solution processability, all-inorganic lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have attracted keen attention for electroluminescent light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) and display applications. However, the performance of perovskite QLED devices is intrinsically limited by the inefficient electrical carrier transport capacity. Herein, one facile but effective method is proposed to enhance the perovskite QLED performance by incorporating a short carbon chain ligand of 2-phenethylammonium bromide (PEABr) to passivate the CsPbBr QD surface.

Intestinal cell death is a defining feature of Crohn's disease (CD), a major form of inflammatory bowel disease. The focus on this aspect of enteric inflammation has mainly been on epithelial cells, while other cell types such as stromal and myeloid cells have received less attention. Hypothesising that decreased macrophage viability in an oxidative environment could be a contributing factor to the pathophysiology of CD, we found that monocyte-derived macrophages from individuals with active CD (but not those in clinical disease remission) have increased sensitivity to cell death induced by HO.

The formation of core-shell quantum dots (QDs) with type-I band alignment results in surface passivation, ensuring the efficient confinement of excitons for light-emitting applications. In such cases, the atomic composition at the core-shell heterojunction significantly affects the optical, and electrical properties of the QDs. However, for InP cores, shell materials are limited to compositions consisting of II-VI group elements.
