In this study, a new size exclusion chromatographic method has been developed and validated for the analysis of mucopolysaccharide polysulfate used as an anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic agent in topical formulations. Mucopolysaccharide polysulfate was analyzed in Repromer OH-4000 (10 μm, 8.0 × 300 mm) and Repromer OH-5000 (10 μm, 8.0 × 300 mm) columns using a 0.05 M sodium sulfate isocratic elution mobile phase system at 40 °C with a flow rate of 1 mL min and detected by using refractive index detection. The method was validated by means of the limit of quantification, limit of detection, linearity, robustness, recovery, precision and accuracy using the Bioanalytical Method Validation Guidance. The calibration curve showed linearity in the 0.090-1.575 mg mL range. The limits of detection and quantification were found to be 45.000 and 90.000 μg mL, respectively. Assay recovery and precision of mucopolysaccharide polysulfate from topical formulations at 0.450, 0.900 and 1.350 mg mL concentrations were evaluated. Intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviation values were calculated to be less than 2.46%. The mean recovery was calculated as 96.64%. The validated method was successfully applied to the determination of mucopolysaccharide polysulfate in cream and gel formulations.

Background: Mucopolysaccharide polysulfate (MPS) is widely used as an active ingredient in topical preparations for the treatment of asteatosis and blood flow disorders. Although topical MPS products can increase cutaneous blood flow (CBF), the underlying mechanism remains unclear.

Objective: In this study, we aimed to elucidate how MPS increases CBF.

Background: It is known that heparinoid, a mucopolysaccharide polysulfate, is effective in improving rough skin and promoting blood circulation as medicines for diseased areas. However, heparinoid has a molecular weight of more than 5000 and cannot penetrate healthy stratum corneum.

Objective: We tested the efficacy of sulfated oligosaccharides with a molecular weight of less than 2000 on the human skin barrier function and moisturizing function.

Background: Frostbite is becoming increasingly common in urban environments, and severe cases can lead to tissue loss. The treatment goal is to preserve tissue and function; the sooner appropriate treatment is administered, the more tissue can be saved. However, not every patient with deep frostbite seeks medical care promptly.

Can Topical Agents (Arnica and Mucopolysaccharide Polysulfate) Reduce Postoperative Pain, Edema and Trismus Following Mandibular Third Molar Surgery?

J Oral Maxillofac Surg

Assistant Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University, Faculty of Dentistry, Bolu, Turkey. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • A study aimed to explore if topical arnica or mucopolysaccharide polysulfate (MPSP) could reduce pain, swelling, and limited mouth opening after the removal of impacted mandibular third molars.
  • The research involved 60 patients divided into three groups: one receiving standard therapy only, one getting arnica alongside standard therapy, and the last receiving MPSP with standard therapy; pain and swelling were assessed at various postoperative intervals.
  • Results showed that both arnica and MPSP significantly reduced pain and swelling compared to the control group, especially during the first five days post-surgery, pointing to their potential benefits in postoperative recovery.
