Climate geroscience: the case for 'wisdom-inquiry' science.

Biol Lett

December 2024

Department of Political Studies, Queen's University Kingston, Ontario K7L 3N6, Canada.

Why should, and how can, the fields of climate science and geroscience (which studies the biology of ageing) facilitate the cross-disciplinary collaboration needed to ensure that human and planetary health are both promoted in the future of an older, and warmer, world? Appealing to the ideal of 'wisdom-oriented' science (Maxwell 1984 In ), where scientists consider themselves to be artisans working for the public good, a number of the real-world epistemic constraints on the scientific enterprise are identified. These include communicative frames that stoke intergenerational conflict (rather than solidarity) and treat the ends of planetary and human health as independent 'sacred values' (Tetlock 2003 , 320-324) rather than as ends. To foster 'climate geroscience'-the field of knowledge and translational science at the intersection of climate science and geroscience-researchers in both fields are encouraged to think of novel ways they could make researchers from the other field 'conversationally' present when framing the aspirations of their respective fields, applying for grant funding and designing their conferences and managing their scientific journals.

These women leaders draw on personal and external motivating factors to assist them in dealing with the challenges associated with being a female leader as a result, research on motivating strategies for women's career progression is a research topic that warrants immediate attention.

J Bioeth Inq

December 2023

School of Health Studies & Rotman Institute of Philosophy, Western University, 1151 Richmond Street, London, Ontario, N6A 3K7, Canada.

South Africa shared with the world the warning of a new strain of SARS-CoV2, Omicron, in November 2021. As a result, many high-income countries (HICs) instituted complete travel bans on persons leaving South Africa and other neighbouring countries. These bans were unnecessary from a scientific standpoint, and they ran counter to the International Health Regulations.

"A passion to change the landscape and drive a renaissance": The mRNA Hub at Afrigen as decolonial aspiration.

Front Public Health

December 2022

Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, King's College London, London, United Kingdom.

In global conversations about COVID-19 vaccine access, Africa has overwhelmingly been characterized as a site of lack. However, the successful reverse engineering of the Moderna vaccine by Afrigen at the mRNA Hub in Cape Town marks a more hopeful path forward. This paper introduces the mRNA Hub and puts it into context of broader decolonial aspirations for African futures in the face of rich countries' disregard.
