AI Article Synopsis

  • A new pathogenic yeast has gained attention for its rapid spread and resistance to multiple drugs, often causing hospital outbreaks and being misidentified by traditional methods.
  • The report details the first case of fluconazole-resistant otitis in an immunocompetent patient in Iran, showing a high resistance level to the drug yet successfully treated with alternative medications.
  • This case marks the second instance of a fluconazole-resistant yeast strain found in otitis in Iran, differing from the earlier strain identified.

Article Abstract

Background And Purpose: , as a new characterized pathogenic yeast, has attracted remarkable attention in the recent decade due to its rapid global emergence and multidrug resistance traits. This unique species is able to cause nosocomial outbreaks and tolerate adverse conditions; however, it has been mostly misidentified by conventional methods.

Case Report: This report aimed to describe the first fluconazole-resistant case of otitis in an immunocompetent patient in Iran. The isolate showed minimum inhibitory concentration of ≥ 32 μg/ml for fluconazole; however, the patient was treated with topical clotrimazole and miconazole with no recurrence.

Conclusion: This was the second strain of isolated from otitis in Iran which was fluconazole-resistant, unlike the first Iranian isolate.

Background: endoscopic ear surgery in patients Chronic Otitis Media(COM) media with eardrum atelectasis.

Objective: to compare the postoperative outcomes and audiological results of the endoscopic approach versus the microscopic approach for treatment of COM media with eardrum atelectasis, using a randomized prospective model.

Methods: Sixty patients were consecutively enrolled in the study and randomized into two groups: Group A 32 patients underwent canal wall up tympanoplasty (CWA); Group B 28 patients underwent tympanoplasty with an exclusive trans-meatal endoscopic approach.

Contralateral Ear in Patients with Chronic Otitis Media.

Indian J Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg

December 2024

Clinical research development unit of Loghman Hakim Hospital, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the condition of the opposite ear in patients undergoing surgery for chronic otitis media (COM), focusing on patients from three hospitals.
  • Out of 228 patients, a majority had non-cholesteatomatous perforations, with slightly fewer presenting with cholesteatoma, and about half had normal contralateral ears.
  • The research found that abnormal findings were more common in the PTP group than in the cholesteatoma group, and larger perforations were noted in the PTP group, but the size of perforation did not correlate with abnormality in the opposite ear.

Background: Infectious brain abscesses and granulomas, characterized by localized collections of pus or inflammatory tissue within the brain parenchyma, pose significant clinical challenges due to their potentially life-threatening nature and complex management requirements.

Methods: This cross-sectional study investigated patients diagnosed with infectious brain abscesses and granulomas from March 1, 2012, to October 22, 2021, in Mashhad, Iran. Data were collected from adult patients admitted to the two primary referral centers for community-acquired neuroinfections and neuroinflammations.
