The wide use and continuous abrasion of rubber-related products appears to be leading to an incredible release of phenylenediamine (PPD) antioxidants in the environment. However, no related research has been conducted on the pollution characteristics and potential health risks of PM-bound PPDs. We report for the first time the ubiquitous distributions of six emerging PPDs and a quinone derivative, -(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-'-phenyl--phenylenediamine quinone (6PPDQ), in PM from urban areas of China. Atmospheric contamination levels of PM-bound PPDs were found to be mostly in pg m amounts between 2018 and 2019. Urban vehicle rubber tire abrasion was found to probably contribute to the PPDs in PM and accounted for their significant spatiotemporal-dependent concentration variations. Furthermore, 6PPDQ, an emerging oxidation product of 6PPD in the environment, was first quantified (pg m) with a total detection rate of 81% in the urban PM, demonstrating its broad existence. On the basis of the determined ambient concentrations, the annual intakes of PPDs and 6PPDQ for adults were not low, indicating their possible human health risks induced by long-term exposure. This study confirms the widespread occurrence of PPDs and 6PPDQ in PM, showing that the pollution of such compounds in urban air should not be underestimated.

Tire wear particles (TWPs) are considered the one of most significant non-exhaust particle emission sources from vehicles. However, there is a lack of research on the emission characteristics of TWPs based on typical driving information. In this work, we used a high-dynamic outside wheel test platform to conduct tire wear tests on multiple types of tires based on a novel test cycle and comprehensively analyzed the differences in their emission characteristics while considering various factors, such as front/rear tire and tire type.

Trees growing in urban areas face increasing stress from atmospheric pollutants, with limited attention given to the early responses of young seedlings. This study aimed to address the knowledge gap regarding the effects of simulated pollutant exposure, specifically particulate matter (PM), elevated ozone (O), and carbon dioxide (CO) concentrations, on young seedlings of five tree species: Scots pine ( L.); Norway spruce ( (L.

The short-term comprehensive impact of the phase-out of global coal combustion on air pollution and climate change.

With the continuous intensification of global warming, the reduction and ultimate phase-out of coal combustion is an inevitable trend in the future global energy transformation. This study comprehensively analyzed the impact of phasing out coal combustion on global emissions and concentrations of air pollutants, radiative fluxes, meteorology and climate using Community Earth System Model 2 (CESM2). The results indicate that after the global phase-out of coal combustion, there is a marked decrease in the concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO), nitrogen oxides (NO) and fine particulate matter (PM), with some regions experiencing a reduction of exceeding 50%.
