A novel bacterium, designated 19SA41, was isolated from the air of the Icelandic volcanic island Surtsey. Cells of strain 19SA41 are Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile rods and form pale yellow-pigmented colonies. The strain grows at 4-30 °C (optimum, 22 °C), at pH 6-10 (optimum, pH 7.

Adaptive ensemble loss and multi-scale attention in breast ultrasound segmentation with UMA-Net.

Med Biol Eng Comput

Artificial Intelligence Lab, School of Computer and Information Sciences, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad, 500046, India.

The generalization of deep learning (DL) models is critical for accurate lesion segmentation in breast ultrasound (BUS) images. Traditional DL models often struggle to generalize well due to the high frequency and scale variations inherent in BUS images. Moreover, conventional loss functions used in these models frequently result in imbalanced optimization, either prioritizing region overlap or boundary accuracy, which leads to suboptimal segmentation performance.

Diabetic wounds with chronic infections present a significant challenge, exacerbated by the growing issue of antimicrobial resistance, which often leads to delayed healing and increased morbidity. This study introduces a novel silver-zinc oxide-eugenol (Ag+ZnO+EU) nanocomposite, specifically designed to enhance antimicrobial activity and promote wound healing. The nanocomposite was thoroughly characterized using advanced analytical techniques, confirming its nanoscale structure, stability and chemical composition.

Breast cancer represents the primary cause of death of women under 65 in developed countries, due to the acquisition of multiple drug resistance mechanisms. The PI3K/AKT pathway is one of the major regulating mechanisms altered during the development of endocrine resistance and inhibition of steps in this signalling pathway are adopted as a key strategy to overcome this issue. ADP-ribosylation is a post-translational modification catalysed by PARP enzymes that regulates essential cellular processes, often altered in diseases.

Perceptual learning of modulation filtered speech.

January 2025

School of Psychology, University of Sussex.

Human listeners have a remarkable capacity to adapt to severe distortions of the speech signal. Previous work indicates that perceptual learning of degraded speech reflects changes to sublexical representations, though the precise format of these representations has not yet been established. Inspired by the neurophysiology of auditory cortex, we hypothesized that perceptual learning involves changes to perceptual representations that are tuned to acoustic modulations of the speech signal.
