Ecotechnologies have the potential to reduce the use of finite resources while providing a variety of co-benefits to society, though they often lack in market competitiveness. In this study, we investigate the sustainability of ecotechnologies for recovering carbon and nutrients, and demonstrate how a so-called "bottom-up" approach can serve as a decision-making instrument. Based on three case study catchments with a focus on domestic wastewater in Sweden and Poland, and on manure, grass and blackwater substrates in Finland, we apply a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) on system alternatives derived from a participatory process. After drawing on an initial systematic mapping of relevant ecotechnologies, the scope of the CBA is determined by stakeholder suggestions, namely in terms of the considered assessment criteria, the physical impacts and the utilised data. Thus, this CBA is rooted in a localised consideration of ecotechnologies rather than a centralised governmental approach to systems boundaries. The key advantage of applying such a bottom-up approach is that it has gone through a robust participatory selection process by local stakeholders, which provides more legitimacy to the decisions reached compared with traditional feasibility studies. Despite considering the revenues of the recovered products as well as the provision of the non-market goods CO mitigation and reduced eutrophication, findings from this study indicate that the benefits of the considered ecotechnologies are often outweighed by their costs. Only anaerobic digestion of agricultural wastes appears to be economically feasible under the current conditions, highlighting that further efforts and incentives may be required to mainstream ecotechnologies.

Studies have underscored the pivotal role of metastasis-associated protein 3 (MTA3) as a cancer regulator, yet its potential as a drug target across cancers necessitates comprehensive evaluation. In this study, we analyzed MTA3 expression profiles to ascertain its diagnostic and prognostic value in pan-cancers, probing associations with genetic variations and immunological characteristics. Notably, liver hepatocellular carcinoma (LIHC) exhibited the most significant correlation with MTA3.

December 2024

University of Gdańsk, Department of Oceanography and Geography al. Marszałka Piłsudskiego 46, 81-378 Gdynia, Poland.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores a new method using quartz powder to break down microalgal cells to improve methane production.
  • A two-phase cultivation process with nitrogen deprivation and salinity changes was applied to two types of algae, enhancing their biochemical potential.
  • Mechanical disruption led to significant increases in methane yield, with Chlorella vulgaris producing 305 mL CH/g volatile solids and Monoraphidium contortum producing 324 mL CH/g VS, marking improvements of 51% and 86%, respectively.

Recently we have investigated polysaccharide from Imperata cylindrica (ICP) for its physicochemical structure and biological activities. However, the digestion characteristics have yet to be understood. This study investigated the digestion and metabolism characteristics of ICP through in vivo fluorescence tracking, in vitro simulated digestion, fecal fermentation experiments, and microbial sequencing.

Rapid, simultaneous detection of organic chemical pollutants in water is an important issue to solve for protecting human health. This study investigated the possibility of developing an reusable optical sensor capable of selective measurements utilizing a chalcogenide transducer supplemented by a hydrophobic polymer membrane with detection based on evanescent waves in the mid-infrared spectrum. In order to optimise a polyisobutylene hydrophobic film deposited on a chalcogenide waveguide, a zinc selenide prism was utilized as a testbed for performing attenuated total reflection with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy.

SLC30A5, a member of the solute transporter protein family, is implicated in tumorigenesis and cancer progression. This study aimed to explore the expression and prognostic significance of SLC30A family genes in pan-cancer, with a specific emphasis on SLC30A5 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Expression patterns and prognostic implications of SLC30A family genes were assessed across 33 cancer types, especially HCC.
