Background: Besides feeding on blood, females of the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae sensu lato readily feed on natural sources of plant sugars. The impact of toxic secondary phytochemicals contained in plant-derived sugars on mosquito physiology and the development of Plasmodium parasites remains elusive. The focus of this study was to explore the influence of the alkaloid ricinine, found in the nectar of the castor bean Ricinus communis, on the ability of mosquitoes to transmit Plasmodium falciparum.

Methods: Females of Anopheles gambiae and its sibling species Anopheles coluzzii were exposed to ricinine through sugar feeding assays to assess the effect of this phytochemical on mosquito survival, level of P. falciparum infection and growth rate of the parasite.

Results: Ricinine induced a significant reduction in the longevity of both Anopheles species. Ricinine caused acceleration in the parasite growth rate with an earlier invasion of the salivary glands in both species. At a concentration of 0.04 g l in An. coluzzii, ricinine had no effect on mosquito infection, while 0.08 g l ricinine-5% glucose solution induced a 14% increase in An. gambiae infection rate.

Conclusions: Overall, our findings reveal that consumption of certain nectar phytochemicals can have unexpected and contrasting effects on key phenotypic traits that govern the intensity of malaria transmission. Further studies will be required before concluding on the putative role of ricinine as a novel control agent, including the development of ricinine-based toxic and transmission-blocking sugar baits. Testing other secondary phytochemicals in plant nectar will provide a broader understanding of the impact which plants can have on the transmission of vector-borne diseases.

Background: The Anopheles culicifacies complex is one of the most important malaria vectors in Southeast Asia and Southeastern Iran. Although the sibling species within this complex are morphologically indistinguishable, they differ significantly in their disease transmission potential, blood-feeding behaviour, and other biological traits. Cytogenetic and chromosomal studies have identified five sibling species within this complex: A, B, C, D, and E.

In tropical countries, malaria transmission is the major health issue. To eradicate malaria, health communities depend on the control measure that affects economy and environment of the countries. To overcome these burdens, there is a great need to develop vaccine against malaria, but there is no vaccine to control malaria effectively.

Background Objectives: Temephos is being used regularly to control immature of vector borne diseases in various states in India.

Methods: World Health Organization method was used to evaluate larval susceptibility status of Aedes aegypti and Anopheles stephensi against temephos in Dehradun of Uttarakhand.

Results: The results of the study revealed that the larval mortality in different localities ranged from 67.

An epidemiological risk assessment of imported malaria cases and potential local transmission in Qatar.

Eur J Public Health

January 2025

Health Protection and Communicable Diseases Control Department, Ministry of Public Health, Doha, Qatar.

Preventing local transmission of malaria from imported cases is crucial for achieving and maintaining malaria elimination. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of imported malaria cases and assess the distribution of malaria vectors in Qatar. Data from January 2016 to December 2022 on imported malaria, including demographic and epidemiological characteristics, travel-related information, and diagnostic results, were collected and analysed using descriptive statistics.
