Deconvolution of Phonon Scattering by Ferroelectric Domain Walls and Point Defects in a PbTiO Thin Film Deposited in a Composition-Spread Geometry.

We present a detailed analysis of the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of a ferroelectric PbTiO thin film deposited in a composition-spread geometry enabling a continuous range of compositions from ∼25% titanium deficient to ∼20% titanium rich to be studied. By fitting the experimental results to the Debye model we deconvolute and quantify the two main phonon-scattering sources in the system: ferroelectric domain walls (DWs) and point defects. Our results prove that ferroelectric DWs are the main agent limiting the thermal conductivity in this system, not only in the stoichiometric region of the thin film ([Pb]/[Ti] ≈ 1) but also when the concentration of the cation point defects is significant (up to ∼15%). Hence, DWs in ferroelectric materials are a source of phonon scattering at least as effective as point defects. Our results demonstrate the viability and effectiveness of using reconfigurable DWs to control the thermal conductivity in solid-state devices.

Germanium (Ge), the next-in-line group-IV material, bears great potential to add functionality and performance to next-generation nanoelectronics and solid-state quantum transport based on silicon (Si) technology. Here, we investigate the direct epitaxial growth of two-dimensional high-quality crystalline Ge layers on Si deposited at ultralow growth temperatures ( = 100-350 °C) and pristine growth pressures (≲10 mbar). First, we show that a decreasing does not degrade the crystal quality of homoepitaxial Ge/Ge(001) by comparing the point defect density using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy.

Diagnostic Techniques for Posterior Cutaneous Nerve Entrapment Syndrome.

This case report highlights the diagnostic process for posterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome (POCNES) in an older adult female patient, with an emphasis on using video demonstrations to guide clinicians. POCNES should be diagnosed based on a combination of specific clinical features, including localized back pain accompanied by pinpoint tenderness lateral to the spinous process, cutaneous sensory abnormalities over the area of pain, severe pain response to pressure on the tender point, and normal clinical and imaging findings. This case demonstrates how these criteria were identified via a thorough physical examination captured on video to provide a visual guide for clinicians.

The Challenge of Fractures in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease.

People with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk of fractures in comparison to the non-CKD population and fractures are associated with high mortality and worsening quality of life. The higher risk observed in the CKD population is related to the complex interplay of CKD-mineral bone disorder (MBD) abnormalities causing changes in bone turnover (T), mineralization (M), and volume (V), along with other risk factors accumulated as glomerular filtration rate declines. The approach for evaluation of bone disease and fracture risk in CKD is different from the approach in the general population.
