In this paper, the process of crack propagation is investigated using the extended finite element method at the mesoscale to study the drill pipe fracture mechanism. Firstly, the property of the S135 drill pipe was analyzed through physical and chemical experiments and the scanning electron microscope method. After that, a grain distribution model of the drill pipe material at the mesoscale was established by the Python scripting language on ABAQUS platform. Furthermore, the extended finite element method was applied to study crack dynamic propagation. And the distribution of stress and strain during the crack propagation were obtained at the mesoscale grain model. Finally, by the mesomechanics "homogenization" method, the stress and strain of the crack propagation model at different times were analyzed, and the influence of crack propagation on drill pipe material was obtained. Simulation results show that, although drill pipe material at the macroscopic scale is in the elastic stage, plastic zone and micro-crack propagation may also exist at the mesoscale. The proposed method in this paper studied the stress distribution in the crack tip during the propagation, which is a benefit for exploring the fracture mechanism of drill pipe.

The petroleum industry is essential for supplying crude oil, which is vital for fuel and chemicals and drives substantial investments in technologies, especially in regard to increasing the durability of the drill strings used in wellbore construction. This study aims to establish and to validate a hardbanding technology for reconditioning NC50 tool joints subjected to wear, thereby increasing drill pipe durability and reducing the risk of failure during drilling, which can lead to ecological pollution, human safety issues, and financial costs. The hardbanding of the tool joints was carried out using the gas metal arc welding process (GMAW) with two different wear-resistant wires, ARNCO 100XT and FLUXOFIL M58.

Pipe-stuck, filtrate volume, and formation damage during the drilling operation are directly related to the poor performance of drilling fluids. Hence, considerable attention is required to improve the filtration and rheological properties of drilling fluids and achieve industrial and environmental qualification standards. This study experimentally investigates the impact of Pectin and Astragalus gum biopolymers on the filtration and rheological properties of the water-based drilling fluid (WBDF).

The design of drill pipe joint thread with unequal taper is proposed to investigate the fracture failure of the API NC38 used in the drill pipe joint of the SU36-8-4H2 well. The effect of changes in thread taper on the stress distribution and mechanical properties of drill pipe joints is analyzed and compared with the API standard thread to determine the optimal thread structure with unequal taper. The results reveal highly concentrated stress at the last engaged thread root of API NC38 single-shoulder thread (SUT) may cause early yield failure of the joint threads.

The behavior of gas migration in goaf under double roof cutting conditions directly influences the effectiveness of gas control measures. This study employs a combination of numerical simulation and field verification to investigate the patterns of gas migration and accumulation in goaf and to develop coordinated gas control methods under the conditions of double roof cutting and retained roadway. The results indicate that with double roof cutting, goaf permeability generally increases from the interior towards the exterior, with significantly higher porosity in the separation range compared to other areas.

Big Data Analysis from the worldwide field shows that lost circulation is a common phenomenon in drilling and the success ratio of remedial treatment for lost circulation is low. It is not only because of these complexities of the formation, but also because of the poor performances of the lost-circulation materials (LCM) and technologies. This paper proposes a new method in plugging, which is based on a particular physical method for lost circulation controlling and plugging while drilling.
