Sixteen chebulic acid derivatives, including nine new (1-9) and seven known (10-16) ones, were isolated from an ethanol extract of the branches and leaves of Balakata baccata. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by their UV, IR, HRESIMS, NMR, electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The effects of all the isolates on antineuroinflammatory and antioxidant activities were evaluated. Compared with the positive control minocycline (IC = 1.21 ± 0.71 μM), compounds 1-16 with IC values being greater than 50 μM, displayed almost no effects on the inhibition of NO production in LPS-induced BV-2 microglial cells, however, the results of antioxidant activity for compounds 1-16 showed significant DPPH-radical scavenging abilities with EC value ranging from 3.98 to 14.24 μM, while the EC value of positive control vitamin C was 14.31 μM. At last, the results of PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis showed that compound 1 could enhance the expression of antioxidases (HO-1, GCLC, and NQO1) at the mRNA levels.

Chebulae Fructus (TCF) is a traditional Chinese medicine and Tibetan medicine with high medicinal value, but its quality control indicators still need clarification. In this study, a strategy was proposed to specify the quality markers (Q-markers) of TCF by constructing a multidimensional feature network that includes dimensions of effectiveness, content, traceability, and specificity. Network pharmacology analysis was performed to validate the effectiveness of the chemical constituents in TCF through creating a TCF-component-disease-target-pathway network.

Herbal medicines (HMs) have deciphered indispensable therapeutic effects against cardiovascular disease (CVD) (the predominant cause of death worldwide). The conventional CVD therapy approaches have not been efficient and need alternative medicines. The objective of this study was a review of herbal bioactive compound efficacy for CVD therapy based on computational and in silico studies.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has arisen due to antibiotic overuse and misuse. Antibiotic resistance renders standard treatments less effective, making it difficult to control some infections, thereby increasing morbidity and mortality. Medicinal plants are attracting increased interest as antibiotics lose efficacy.

Medicinal plants and their derivatives represent a promising reservoir of remedies for various ailments. Especially secondary metabolites of these plants, including alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, terpenoids, steroids, saponins, tannins, and anthraquinones, play crucial roles in hepatoprotection. Studies have identified several prominent phytoconstituents, such as silymarin, quercetin, luteolin, glycyrrhizin, curcumin, gallic acid, chebulic acid, catechin, aloin, emodin, liquiritin, liquiritigenin, cudraflavone B, and karaviloside, as effective agents for addressing hepatotoxicity.

Article Synopsis
  • Chebulae Fructus (CF) is identified as a rich source of hydrolyzable tannins and was analyzed using a new liquid chromatography method to determine 12 key phenolcarboxylic and tannic compounds.
  • * The study successfully distinguished CF from four adulterants through quantitative analysis and advanced statistical methods.
  • * It was found that the highest concentration of these compounds is in the exocarp of CF, and during drying, hydrolyzable tannins break down into simpler acids, which is crucial for understanding CF's quality.
