Background: Recent studies have confirmed the critical role of neonatal microglia in wound healing and axonal regeneration following spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the limited migration of microglia to the center of adult lesion may significantly impede their potential benefits.
Methods: We established a model of microglial centripetal migration and prolonged retention in C57BL/6J and transgenic mice by injecting exogenous C-X3-C motif chemokine ligand 1 (CX3CL1) and macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) directly into the lesion site post-SCI.

Macrophage differentiation, phenotype, and function have been assessed extensively in vitro by predominantly deriving human macrophages from peripheral blood. It is accepted that there are differences between macrophages isolated from different human tissues; however, the importance of anatomical source for in vitro differentiation and characterization is less clear. Here, phenotype and function were evaluated between human macrophages derived from bone marrow or peripheral blood.

The engraftment of transplanted islets depends on the rapid establishment of a novel vascular network. The present study evaluated the effects of cord blood-derived blood outgrowth endothelial cells (BOECs) on the viability of neonatal porcine islets (NPIs) and the post-transplant outcome of grafted NPIs. Dispersed NPIs and human BOECs were reaggregated on microwell cell culture plates and tested for their anti-apoptotic and pro-angiogenic capacity by qRT-PCR and immunohistochemistry.

Background: Burn wounds are commonly encountered in clinical settings and the management aims at the prevention of mortality and morbidity due to disability. The platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is blood-derived biomaterial that is enriched with growth factors and cytokines that facilitate wound healing. The PRP has proven its efficacy in various other wounds, but its role in post-burn raw areas and graft take has not been validated.
