Purpose: To investigate the effects of a systematic tuning protocol for ankle foot orthosis footwear combinations (AFO-FC) using incrementing heel height on gait in children with cerebral palsy (CP).
Methods: Eighteen children with CP (10.8 ± 3 years, Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) I-II) underwent 3D gait analysis on a treadmill, while the AFO heel surface was systematically incremented with wedges. Children were subdivided based on their gait pattern, i.e., knee hyperextension (EXT) and excessive knee flexion (FLEX). Outcome measures included sagittal hip and knee angles and moments, shank to vertical angle (SVA), foot to horizontal angle, and gait profile score (GPS).
Results: For both groups, incrementing heel height resulted in increased knee flexion, more inclined SVA, and increased knee extension moments. This resulted in gait improvements for some children of the EXT-group, but not in FLEX. High variation was found between individuals and within-subject effects were not always consistent for kinematic and kinetics.
Conclusions: A systematic AFO-FC tuning protocol using incremented heel height can be effective to improve gait in children with CP walking with EXT. The current results emphasise the importance of including kinematics as well as kinetics of multiple instances throughout the gait cycle for reliable interpretation of the effect of AFO tuning on gait.Implications for rehabilitationA systematic ankle foot orthosis footwear combinations (AFO-FC) tuning protocol using incremented heel height can improve gait in children walking with knee hyperextension.Tuning results in changes throughout the gait cycle.Little evidence is found for an optimal SVA of 10-12° at midstance. For clinical interpretation, both joint kinematic and kinetic parameters should be considered throughout the gait cycle and evaluation should not be based on SVA only.

Room-temperature activation of O into a super dioxide radical (O˙) is a crucial step in oxidation processes. Here, the concept of tuning the local electron density of carbons is adopted to develop highly efficient catalysts for molecular oxygen activation. We demonstrate that the π electron of sp carbons is essential for activating O with the assistance of ultra-micropores, while varying defects or functional groups induce local electron rearrangement of carbons, thereby altering their catalytic capacity.

Background: With the acceleration of population aging, it becomes increasingly difficult to meet the complex needs of older adults living in communities. Although volunteering is an important resource in addressing the aging crisis, the lack of clear motivations and finely-tuned strategic guidance present obstacles. This study aims to understand the motivations and strategies involved in voluntary service for urban home-based older adults provided by volunteers with a nursing background.

Linking paramagnetic centers via metallophilic interactions allows for strong magnetic interactions over long distances. An unprecedented example of genuine isomers of [Ni{Pt(SAc)}(pyNO)] provides an ideal platform for the experimental assessment of the distance dependence of magnetic interaction across metallophilic bonds. This system can be isolated in two different phases with identical chemical composition but disparate Pt···Pt distances of 3.

The application of large language models in materials science has opened new avenues for accelerating materials development. Building on this advancement, we propose a novel framework leveraging large language models to optimize experimental procedures for synthesizing quantum dot materials with multiple desired properties. Our framework integrates the synthesis protocol generation model and the property prediction model, both fine-tuned on open-source large language models using parameter-efficient training techniques with in-house synthesis protocol data.

The chemical and structural flexibility of hybrid organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites (HOIPs) provides an ideal platform for engineering not only their well-studied optical properties, but also their magnetic ones. In this review we present HOIPs from a new perspective, turning the attention to their magnetic properties and their potential as a new class of on-demand low-dimensional magnetic materials. Focusing on HOIPs containing transition metals, we comprehensively present the progress that has been made in preparing, understanding and exploring magnetic HOIPs.
