The deposition of amyloid plaques is considered one of the main microscopic features of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Since plaque formation can precede extensive neurodegeneration and it is the main clinical manifestation of AD, it constitutes a relevant target for new treatment and diagnostic approaches. Micro-Raman spectroscopy, a label-free technique, is an accurate method for amyloid plaque identification and characterization. Here, we present a high spatial resolution micro-Raman hyperspectral study in transgenic APPswePS1ΔE9 mouse brains, showing details of AD tissue biochemical and histological changes without staining. First we used stimulated micro-Raman scattering to identify the lipid-rich halo surrounding the amyloid plaque, and then proceeded with spontaneous (conventional) micro-Raman spectral mapping, which shows a cholesterol and sphingomyelin lipid-rich halo structure around dense-core amyloid plaques. The detailed images of this lipid halo relate morphologically well with dystrophic neurites surrounding plaques. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of the micro-Raman hyperspectral data indicates the feasibility of the optical biomarkers of AD progression with the potential for discriminating transgenic groups of young adult mice (6-month-old) from older ones (12-month-old). Frequency-specific PCA suggests that plaque-related neurodegeneration is the predominant change captured by Raman spectroscopy, and the main differences are highlighted by vibrational modes associated with cholesterol located majorly in the lipid halo.

Malassezia species are lipophilic yeasts recognized for causing skin manifestations, such as pityriasis versicolor. In addition, Malassezia can lead to invasive infection, mostly intravascular catheter-associated sepsis-related lipid-containing total parenteral nutrition in neonates and immunocompromised hosts. We experienced a case of invasive pulmonary Malassezia infection in a patient with refractory ulcerative colitis undergoing immunosuppressive treatment without lipid-containing total parenteral nutrition.

Background: This study investigates to what extent the presence of the EU organic (EU‑O) logo and a sustainable irrigation (SI) logo on extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) labels affects (i) consumers expectations and purchase intention based on label information and (ii) acceptance of olive oil when tasted under informed versus blind conditions. A panel of 94 consumers took part in the study. Attention paid to label components during the task designed to evaluate the logos' effect on expectations was recorded by means of an eye-tracker.

The effect of Regel bulb powder (AMRP) supplementation on the flavour of beef from Angus calves has not been investigated thus far. We used GC-IMS and untargeted lipidomics techniques to examine the volatile compound and lipid metabolic profiles and reveal the effects of dietary AMRP supplementation on the flavour of beef. A total of 6 characteristic volatile compounds and 30 key lipid compounds were identified in the AMRP treatment group.

In Florida, angular leaf spot, caused by , was the only known bacterial disease in strawberry, which is sporadic and affects the foliage and calyx. However, from the 2019-2020 to 2023-2024 Florida strawberry seasons, unusual bacterial-like symptoms were observed in commercial farms, with reports of up to 30 % disease incidence. Typical lesions were water-soaked and angular in early stages that later became necrotic with a circular-ellipsoidal purple halo, and consistently yielded colonies resembling on culture media.
