A new original method, applying a coaxial protective airflow, was tested aiming to improve the pure water jet efficiency in surface layer removal or medium hard materials cutting or blasting. The dual action of the air flow is expected: the air co-flowing the water jet with approximately the same velocity should prevent the central jet from breaking up into tiny droplets in the near field, and simultaneously, it should support jet decomposition into big parts with enough destructive potential in the far-field. A brief survey of the relevant literature dealing with the water jet instability is presented, introducing four recognized breakup regimes. An original cutting head designed to generate a waterjet surrounded by protective coaxial air flow is introduced. The submitted device is supposed to operate within the first wind-induced regime. Two types of experiments, consisting of blasting limestone bricks placed either in the air or underwater, were realized. The depths of kerfs produced with different water pressures and air overpressures were evaluated. While no substantial positive effect was recognized in the air performance, the submerged blasting of the same material under similar conditions appeared to be promising.

Microbial communities are crucial for important ecosystem functions in the open ocean, such as primary production and nutrient cycling. However, few studies have addressed the distribution of microplankton communities in the remote oligotrophic region of the Pacific Ocean. Moreover, the biogeochemical and physical drivers of microbial community structure are not fully understood in these areas.

Bathymetry critically influences the intrusion of warm Circumpolar Deep Water onto the continental shelf and under ice shelf cavities in Antarctica, thereby forcing ice melting, grounding line retreat, and sea level rise. We present a novel and comprehensive bathymetry of Antarctica that includes all ice shelf cavities and previously unmeasured continental shelf areas. The new bathymetry is based on a 3D inversion of a circumpolar compilation of gravity anomalies constrained by measurements from the International Bathymetric Chart of the Southern Ocean, BedMachine Antarctica, and discrete seafloor measurements from seismic and ocean robotic probes.

In order to improve the power and energy of water-jet-guided laser, this paper introduces a double beam water-jet-guided laser (DWJL) technology. Based spatially polarized light combination and temporal phase modulation, two lasers are effectively coupled into a water jet with diameter of 100 μm. The maximum output peak power reaches 100 kW and the maximum pulse energy is 4.

Confined space fires could easily cause serious casualties and property damage, and foam is an effective means of preventing confined space fires. The existing foam generator does not have both momentum and foam expansion rate (FER) and is poorly suited to confined spaces. In order to develop a foam generator suitable for confined space fire protection, an in-depth analysis of the physical foaming characteristics of self-suction foam is required, and the structure of the foam generator is optimized accordingly.

As a novel type of pulsed water jet (PWJ), the pressurized pulsed water jet (PPWJ) shows great potential in the field of rock fragmentation engineering. In this study, the macro and micro morphologies of erosion craters on different targets (sandstone and granite) were measured to investigate the rock fragmentation characteristics of PPWJ. The results show that the fragmentation processes of granite and sandstone are significantly different from each other.
