The incidence of endophthalmitis after vitrectomy is extremely low, especially lower in silicone oil-filled eyes.Silicone oil exerts a toxic effect on the cell membranes of microorganisms and leads to the lack of nutrients. It is thus believed to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi.Endophthalmitis induced by mixed bacteria in silicone oil-filled eye has been rarely reported. We reviewed the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of a patient with endophthalmitis caused by mixed infection of and in the silicone oil-filled eye, aiming to improve the understanding and diagnosis of mixed infections.

Vitrectomy with silicone oil (SO) endotamponade is an effective treatment for vision-threatening retinal diseases. However, unexplained vision impairment has been reportedly critical side effects. Previously, we reported that the eyes with ocular toxoplasmosis showed retinal ferroptosis with the clinical sign of reduced intravitreal iron (Fe).

Department of Ophthalmology, Hadassah University Medical Center, Faculty of Medicine, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Israel.

Purpose: Macular edema is a known complication following complicated retinal detachment repair with silicone oil (SiO) tamponade. Limited previous research has not led to a consensus regarding the safety and efficacy of intra-SiO injections. Consequently, we aim to present our case series study on intra-SiO injections for postoperative macular edema.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the pharmacokinetics, safety, and optimal dosages of intravitreal agents in eyes filled with silicone oil, while addressing challenges of treatment administration.
  • Findings suggest that while anti-VEGF agents have similar half-lives in silicone oil-filled eyes, most evidence is derived from case reports and small studies, with standard dosages recommended for drugs like bevacizumab being the most supported.
  • The research emphasizes the importance of close monitoring for side effects, with specific guidance on the use of various intravitreal medications, including steroids, antivirals, and antibiotics.
