In Situ Conversion of Atherosclerotic Plaques' Iron into Nanotheranostics.

J Am Chem Soc

January 2025

Materdicine Lab, School of Life Sciences, Shanghai University, 200444 Shanghai, P. R. China.

The presence of a substantial necrotic core in atherosclerotic plaques markedly heightens the risk of rupture, a consequence of elevated iron levels that exacerbate oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, thereby sustaining a detrimental cycle of ferroptosis and inflammation. Concurrently targeting both ferroptosis and inflammation is crucial for the effective treatment of vulnerable plaques. In this study, we introduce gallium hexacyanoferrate nanoabsorption catalysts (GaHCF NACs) designed to disrupt this pathological cycle.

The evolution of signaling and monitoring in plant-fungal networks.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Department of Biology, University of Oxford, Oxford OX1 3SZ, United Kingdom.

Experiments have shown that when one plant is attacked by a pathogen or herbivore, this can lead to other plants connected to the same mycorrhizal network up-regulating their defense mechanisms. It has been hypothesized that this represents signaling, with attacked plants producing a signal to warn other plants of impending harm. We examined the evolutionary plausibility of this and other hypotheses theoretically.

The recent US Food and Drug Administration approval of pivmecillinam-an oral prodrug of the amidinopenicillin antibiotic mecillinam-presents a valuable opportunity to address the need for new treatments for uncomplicated urinary tract infection (uUTI). We report findings of a systematic literature review of the safety profile of pivmecillinam/mecillinam based on more than 40 years' experience, mainly in Europe and Canada, to describe its tolerability profile and identify any important safety signals. In total, 110 eligible publications were identified describing use of pivmecillinam/mecillinam as monotherapy or in combination, for treatment of uUTI or other infectious conditions.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive memory loss and cognitive decline, significantly impairing the daily life of elderly individuals. The low abundance of blood-based biomarkers in AD necessitates higher analytical technique requirements. Herein, one novel iridium-based ECL self-enhanced nanoemitter (TPrA@Ir-SiO) was unprecedentedly reported, and it was further used to construct an ultrasensitive ECL magnetic immunosensor by a multiple-signal amplification strategy to unequally sensitively and accurately detect the AD blood-based biomarker (P-tau181) in this work.

An Activatable Chemiluminescent Self-Reporting Sulfur Dioxide Donor for Inflammatory Response and Regulation of Gaseous Vasodilation.

ACS Sens

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Fine Chemicals, Frontiers Science Center for Smart Materials Oriented Chemical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 116024, China.

Sulfur dioxide (SO), being a novel gaseous signaling molecule, exhibits significant potential for application in the field of cardiovascular diseases. SO donors serve as crucial tools for the transportation and regulation of SO in vivo, facilitating the investigation of physiological roles associated with this molecule. However, the current therapeutic SO donors lack the capability to monitor the real-time release of SO, thereby hindering accurate assessment of their therapeutic efficacy and target localization.
