Objectives: This controlled trial investigated the effects of energy-dense pediatric oral nutritional supplements ONS versus standard ONS in pediatric patients requiring oral nutritional support for low body mass index (BMI) or weight gain per day (WGD) below the average for age and sex.  Patients and Methods: 34 children and adolescents (mean age 10.2 years) with faltering growth requiring ONS were randomized to cONS (n =22) or sONS (n = 12) for a year. We recorded their weight (WT), height (HT) and calculated height growth velocity (GV), Ht-SDS, BMI, WGD, every 3 months for a year.  Results: The WGD, height growth velocity (GV: cm/year), and Ht-SDS increased significantly, in both groups, during the year of ONS. The use of the cONS resulted in significantly greater mean total WGD and BMI-SDS after 6 months and 1 year, compared to the sONS group. The increase in IGF1-SDS was significantly higher in the cONS groups versus the sONS group. Moreover, the WGD was correlated significantly with the height GV during the year of ONS intake.

Conclusions: ONS improved the growth of underweight old children and adolescents who had no systemic illness. There was a significantly higher WGD and BMI-SDS in the group on cONS compared to those on sONS. In both groups, long-term use of ONS significantly improved Ht-SDS.

Introduction: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) reversal might be necessary to alleviate refractory surgical or nutritional complications, such as postprandial hypoglycemia, malnutrition, marginal ulceration, malabsorption, chronic diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, gastro-esophageal reflux disease, chronic pain, or excessive weight loss. The surgical technique of RYGB reversal is not standardized; potential strategies include the following: (1) gastro-gastrostomy: hand-sewn technique, linear stapler, circular stapler; (2) handling of the Roux limb: reconnection or resection (if remaining intestinal length ≥ 4 m).

Case Presentation: We demonstrate the surgical technique of a laparoscopic reversal of RYGB with hand-sewn gastro-gastrostomy and resection of the alimentary limb with the aim of improving the patient's quality of life.

Bacteriocin can effectively improve the gut inflammation for their superior antibacterial activity. However, its inherent attributes, such as easily degraded and off-target effect in the gastrointestinal environment, make bacteriocins' efficient oral delivery a great challenge. Herein, a pectin/4-carboxyphenylboric acid/carboxymethyl chitosan (PEC/CPBA/CMCS) hydrogel microbead targeted oral delivery system was innovatively developed for the plantaricin RX-8 protective delivery, precisely targeted inflammatory microenvironment (IME) and sustained released plantaricin RX-8 by pH/ROS dual stimulation response.

Here, we investigated whether a mixture of and (1:3, KGC01CE) could suppress muscle atrophy in HO-induced C2C12 cells and dexamethasone-injected mice. Our results revealed that KGC01CE effectively safeguarded against HO-induced muscle atrophy in C2C12 cells compared with the same mixture at other ratios. We demonstrated that dexamethasone elicited oxidative stress in muscle tissue and decreased the grip strength and cross-sectional areas of muscle fibers; however, oral administration of KGC01CE (1:3) suppressed these dexamethasone-induced changes.
