Here, we used Bama Xiang mini-pigs to explore the effects of different dietary β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) levels (0, 0.13, 0.64 or 1.28%) on lipid metabolism of adipose tissue. Results showed that HMB decreased the fat percentage of pigs (linearly, < 0.05), and the lowest value was observed in the 0.13% HMB group. Moreover, the colonic acetic acid concentration and the relative abundance were increased in response to HMB supplementation ( < 0.05). Correlation analysis identified a positive correlation between the relative abundance and acetic acid production, and a negative correlation between fat percentage and the relative abundance or acetic acid production. HMB also upregulated the phosphorylation (p) of AMPKα, Sirt1, and FoxO1, and downregulated the p-mTOR expression. Collectively, these findings indicate that reduced fat percentage in Bama Xiang mini-pigs could be induced by HMB supplementation and the mechanism might be associated with the -acetic acid-AMPKα axis.

The meat production traits of pigs are influenced by the expression regulation of multiple gene types, including mRNAs, miRNAs, and lncRNAs. To study the differences in meat production traits at the transcriptional level among individuals with different growth rates, the samples from eight Duroc × Bama Xiang F2 crossbred pigs with a fast growth rate (high gTroup) or a slow growth rate (low group) were selected to perform whole transcriptome sequencing and ceRNA regulatory network construction. This study first analyzed the differences in physiological and biochemical indicators, muscle histological characteristics, and muscle fiber types.

Single gamete cell sequencing together with long-read sequencing can reliably produce chromosome-level phased genomes. In this study, we employed PacBio HiFi and Hi-C sequencing on a male Landrace pig, coupled with single-sperm sequencing of its 102 sperm cells. A haplotype assembly method was developed based on long-read sequencing and sperm-phased markers.

Pig carpal glands play crucial roles in territorial recognition, reproductive behavior, and information exchange; however, their effects on production traits and underlying genetic mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, 1028 pigs from six populations were counted for the carpal gland diverticular numbers (CGDNs) on the left (CGDN) and right (CGDN) legs, and their carcass and meat quality traits were assessed. The CGDNs were significantly different among the populations, and Licha Black pigs had a lower CGDN than the Bama Xiang breed.
