Primary alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of bone.

Andes Pediatr

Clínica Santa María, Santiago, Chile.

Published: June 2021

Introduction: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a malignant solid tumor of mesenchymal origin. It is the most com mon soft-tissue sarcoma in childhood and adolescence. 65% of cases are diagnosed before the age of 6. Histological subtypes include embryonal, alveolar, pleomorphic, and fused-cell RMS. The embryo nal subtype is more frequent in children, while the alveolar one is more frequent in adolescents and adults.

Objective: To describe the clinical presentation of primary alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma in a schoolgirl.

Clinical Case: 7-year-old schoolgirl with one-month history of progressive pain in her left thigh. X-ray shows a lytic lesion in the left femur diaphysis. A study was performed with 2 biopsies, immunohistochemistry, and PAX-FOXO1 studies which were compatible with alveolar RMS. Con clusion: Primary alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the bone is rare, but it should be considered within the differential diagnosis of primary small-round-blue cell bone tumors. Despite presenting a poor prognosis cytogenetic, this type of tumor seems to have better biological behavior, which for a successful treatment makes necessary to have a high index of suspicion in order to install a multimodal therapy in the context of a national protocol.

The posterior mandible is the primary area for occlusal function. However, long-term tooth loss in the posterior mandible often leads to rapid absorption of both buccal and lingual trabecular bone plates and subsequent atrophy of the alveolar ridge. This ultimately results in horizontal bone deficiencies that complicate achieving an optimal three-dimensional placement for dental implants.

Aims And Background: The study of the morphology of soft tissues as well as hard tissues of the orofacial region holds prime importance. A very less information is known about the lips (soft tissues) and maxillo-mandibular arches (hard tissue structures) in primary dentition. Henceforth, there is a need to classify, find the prevalence and correlation of various lip shapes, and arch forms in primary dentition.

Comparative evaluation of allograft particulate bone and cortical bone blocks combined with xenograft bone for labial bone defects in the aesthetic zone: a prospective cohort study.

BMC Oral Health

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases & National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases & Department of Implant Dentistry, West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University, Chengdu, 610041, China.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the osteogenic performance of allograft particulate bone and cortical bone blocks combined with xenograft under bovine pericardium membranes, for treating different degrees of labial bone defects in the aesthetic zone.

Materials And Methods: Twenty-four patients with bone defects were divided into two groups based on defect severity (Terheyden 1/4 and 2/4 groups). The Terheyden 1/4 group received granular bone grafts alone, while the Terheyden 2/4 group received cortical bone blocks combined with granular bone grafts.

Pulmonary hypertensive changes are commonly seen by the surgical pathologist, but the majority represents secondary changes due to some process extrinsic to the lung. Some primary, or idiopathic, vascular diseases result in unique pathologic changes including the plexiform lesion and venous hypertensive changes. Thromboembolic disease also shows unique pathologic features.

Incidental nanoparticle characterisation in industrial settings to support risk assessment modelling.

Research on nanoparticle (NP) release and potential exposure can be assessed through experimental field campaigns, laboratory simulations, and prediction models. However, risk assessment models are typically designed for manufactured NP (MNP) and have not been adapted for incidental NP (INP) properties. A notable research gap is identifying NP sources and their chemical, physical, and toxicological properties, especially in real-world settings.
