Pixel scaling effects have been a major issue in the development of high-resolution color image sensors due to the reduced photoelectric signal and color crosstalk. Various structural color techniques have been proposed, and the large freedom in color manipulation by the structure design has been demonstrated. However, the optical efficiency and color distortion limit the practical applications due to their intrinsic filtering mechanism. Instead, the on-chip full-color routing is quite desirable for improving the signal-to-noise ratio. In this study, a single-layer quick response code-like nanorouter is proposed for the full-color light routing in a pixel level of image sensors. It shows much higher routing efficiency than various planar lens schemes for signal wavelength focusing. Moreover, over 60% signal enhancement with robust polarization insensitivity is obtained in all three primary color bands with the same nanorouter by a multi-objective optimization method. Negligible color distortion is observed from the reconstructed color image. Such a simple nanorouter scheme is promising for the development of image sensors, photovoltaics and displays.

The increasing demand for soft robotic systems in agricultural, biomedical and other applications has driven the development of actuators that can mimic the flexibility and adaptability of human muscles. Several studies have explored the design and implementation of soft actuators for robotic applications, however, there is a need for soft actuators demonstrating delicate gripping capabilities but also excel in specific biomedical applications, such as therapeutic massaging. The objective of this work is to develop a multi-finger soft pneumatic actuator mimicking human fingers for Ayurvedic therapeutic massaging and gripping applications.

Aiming to enable online freshness-monitoring of meat within modified-atmosphere package, we developed a ratiometric array that was fluorescently responsive to volatile organic compounds-ammonia (NH) released by protein decaying. The array was consisted of two 3 mm × 6 mm rectangles precisely and uniformly printed with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) as indicator and rhodamine B (RhB) as internal reference on the filter-paper, respectively. The fluorescence intensity of the array area was calibrated according to Green/Red ratio of the digitalized pixels extracted from images facilitated by a smartphone.

Smart and Noninvasive SERS Immunosensors for Monitoring Dynamic Expression of Cytokines during Cell Pyroptosis.

Anal Chem

Guangdong Key Laboratory of Biomedical Measurements and Ultrasound Imaging, School of Biomedical Engineering, Shenzhen University Medical School, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen 518060, PR China.

Accompanying the occurrence of inflammatory reaction to release cytokines, pyroptosis can activate an immune response for resistance against cancer. Consequently, elevated levels of cytokines released by cancer cells are highly correlated with the effectiveness of cancer treatment. Herein, a noninvasive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) immunosensor was developed to sensitively and specifically measure the tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), a proinflammatory cytokine, during the cell pyroptosis process.

The firing pin impression left on the base of a cartridge case is a critical analytical feature in forensic science. To address the limitations of traditional manual trace analysis and mitigate the risk of secondary damage to physical evidence, we employ a line laser displacement sensor to capture and analyze three-dimensional (3D) traces of fired cartridge cases. However, when using laser displacement sensors to collect traces from metal cartridge cases, the high curvature and reflectivity of the metal surface can cause specular reflections, potentially leading to measurement anomalies in the firing pin impressions.

The optimal method for three-dimensional thermal imaging within cells involves collecting intracellular temperature responses while simultaneously obtaining corresponding 3D positional information. Current temperature measurement techniques based on the photothermal properties of quantum dots face several limitations, including high cytotoxicity and low fluorescence quantum yields. These issues affect the normal metabolic processes of tumor cells.
