Koch's postulates: Confirming as the cause of yellow fungal disease in . | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

  • An ascomycete fungus has been linked to a serious skin condition called yellow fungal disease (YFD) in green iguanas and bearded dragons in Europe and North America.
  • Symptoms include swelling and the formation of lesions that start as white bumps and turn into yellow, crusty scales, eventually leading to necrosis.
  • The experiment confirms that this fungus is the primary cause of YFD in bearded dragons by meeting Koch's postulates criteria for establishing a disease-causing agent.

Article Abstract

is an ascomycete fungus associated with a necrotizing dermatitis in captive green iguanas () and bearded dragons () across both Europe and North America. Clinical signs of the disease include swelling and lesion formation. Lesions develop from white raised bumps on the skin and progress into crusty, yellow, discolored scales, eventually becoming necrotic. The clinical signs are the basis of a colloquial name yellow fungal disease (YFD). However, until now, has not been confirmed as the primary agent of the disease in bearded dragons. In this experiment, we fulfill Koch's postulates criteria of disease, demonstrating as the primary agent of YFD in bearded dragons.
